Biden set an energy trap for himself
Yahoo Finance ^ | March 25th, 2022 | Rick Newman·Senior Columnist

President Biden has good intentions on climate change. His plan to halve carbon emissions by 2030 is on the scale energy and climate experts say is necessary to prevent the worst damage a warming planet could cause. He favors aggression action without the massive overshoot far-left schemes such as the “Green New Deal” would entail. That fits with his desire to make big changes that have at least some bipartisan support and can survive political turnover in Washington.

Yet Biden now finds himself snared in an energy trap he constructed himself. He has lobbied for the phase-out of fossil fuels that are now in short supply, causing gasoline and home-heating costs to surge. But the renewable energy he favors isn’t yet abundant enough to substitute for scarce fossil fuels. Biden hasn’t actually changed much in the energy industry, so far, yet voters hearing his anti-carbon rhetoric conclude he’s responsible for rising costs that are denting family budgets. It’s like he’s asking Americans to cross a bridge from old forms of energy to new, even though the span isn’t complete yet and the road is rough going.

Soaring gas prices and other types of inflation clearly threaten Biden’s presidency and Democrats’ grip on power in Washington. Biden’s approval rating has drifted down to 42%, from a high of 55% shortly after he took office in 2021. Recent polling shows about 40% of voters blame Biden for high gas prices, which have risen from an average of about $2.50 per gallon when he took office to $4.25 now. The most immediate threat for Biden is that voters will punish his fellow Democrats in this year’s midterm elections, and return both houses of Congress to Republican control.

Biden's and the neocon's pompous preening over Ukraine will devastate western economies.

Look for oil and natgas to at least double in price. Everything else should go up 50% or more.

Wholesale economic destruction.

Hope it's worth it to you.

If we are at peak oil, as the leftards claim, then why not just let the market do its thing? The price of oil, gas, etc. will naturally go up making other alternatives more attractive.

I just can't wait for my thorium-powered SUV!

25% of the world’s energy production has been taken offline.

Not to mention the world’s number 1 exporter of wheat.

And you know what that’ll do to food prices.

Clearly Biden’s sanctions on Russia will punish the US, and all the West, much more than they punish Russia. Agree???

"Biden's and the neocon's pompous preening over Ukraine will devastate western economies."

This is no accident. It is necessary for the great reset. Never let a crisis go to waste.

...His plan to halve carbon emissions by 2030 is on the scale energy and climate experts say is necessary to prevent the worst damage a warming planet could cause...

Actually, his plan would have done nothing "to prevent the worst damage a warming planet could cause", even if Biden's goals were actually achieved, because carbon emissions elsewhere would continue to increase. The Biden plan was and is irrelevant political posturing (as is most of the biased 'news' Yahoo puts out ;>)...

Biden set it on purpose and it has nothing to do with Ukraine. He aggressively took the sledgehammer to domestic production just as soon as he took office.

It’s important to recognize one fundamental fact: President Biden has not had a rational thought since before others decided he was running for president. Now that he is President he says and does only what he is told to say and do. Period.

We seem to be cutting carbon emissions simply through innovation and improvements in technology - we met the goals of the Kyoto Protocols without ratifying them and without enacting any of the crippling regulations.

US petroleum production isnt following the prices so far, and prices were trending much higher long before the Ukraine war.

One has to go deep into the weeds of bureaucracy and its multiple polucy initiatives to figure things out. Among them leaning on banks to limit credit to frackers.

The trouble is that the committee running Biden is not realistic or competent either. They seem devoted to their pet projects without any perspective. Like the Iran thing.

When I was young US oil and gas exploration was financed mainly by rich private investors I believe.

Wildcatting was too risky for bankers’ tastes.
