China is Russia’s closest ally today, but they are looking at this and are already redrawing maps for the eventual day they take some territory.

I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that after seeing Russia's problems in Ukraine and the world's response to the invasion, that China is now having second thoughts about invading Taiwan.

shelled into rubble by Russian battleships anchored off the coast. Why are these sitting duck ships not being blown out of the water? I just don’t get it as to why basic military defense tactics aren’t being carried out when being attacked?

A. Russia like all other nations does not have battleships in their fleet.

B. Most of the ordnance used is dropped or launched by the VKF, with the RN lobbing unguided rounds from 5” guns from various Black Sea Fleet vessels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_Fleet

C. The US is sending or has sent anti-ship missiles; may be responsible for the destruction of the Orsk transport ship.

D. The UA is using tactics taught by US Green Berets and others. They only have so much munitions so its a matter of priorities where they attack, which tactics they and munitions they use.

Given Putin’s history of being careful and calculated it is almost inexplicable that he did this and as the article states there is not real victory now for him or for Russia no matter what happens in the “battle”.

It only takes a couple of bad assumption for Vladimir Putin to get to this situation.

First assumption: Ukraine would be a cakewalk, much like Crimea was.

Second assumption: Call it the "Pearl Harbor" assumption, the West is weak and declining, and will not offer any resistance.

Third assumption: Russian armor, planes, and counter measures are a match for the man-portable anti-armor and anti-air weapons.

All three of those assumptions seem to have been in error.

It appears Vladimir Putin lack much knowledge of both his own forces and the enemy forces.

Someone needs to tell Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy has already taken NATO membership off the table. He should be threatening a “highway of death” all the way back to Moscow rather than negotiating a back stabbing of the regime of neocons and NWO dolts in DC.

It’s funny. Stories are posted from MSM and you guys point at it and scream. Stuff is posted from government sources..and you guys point at it and scream. Stuff is pointed from “think tanks” and you point and scream. Well respected blogs are posted and you point and scream.

I am beginning to think your pointing and screaming is all your side can do.

Ridicule is one of Alinksy’s rules. When you know that’s what’s happening…people stop listening.

Get ready for East Ukraine / West Ukraine to join the Koreas, perhaps for a few decades.

Wow, thanks Francis! I've only been on FR since 1998, so it took this long for me to be found out.

And it appears that you will believe anything that confirms your wishful thinking. Hate to tell you, Putin may be willing to push the big red button, but he is not a brain dead piece of poo like our fearless lead from behind resident in chief, Brandon.

We looked like idiots sacrificing Americans for nothing in both Iraq and Afghanistan. We lost a 20 year war to goat herders. Our shock and awe is all bullshit. Our military is cucked out , they failed their oaths and allowed China and American communists to steal an election. Honorable men would not be soldiers for An American dictator/Chinese and Russian puppet.

The West has a choice: Peace with a hobbled, humbled Russia or revenge. I’m afraid it will choose revenge.

The terms for peace:

1) War reparations sufficient to repair critical infrastructure, homes, etc.

2) No territorial gains.

3) Removal of puppet government in Donbass.

IN EXCHANGE FOR:

4) Recognition of Crimea

5) No NATO membership for Ukraine until resolution of ethnic situation

6) Elimination of certain sanctions, those which result in a weak, impoverishing Russian economy.

I was calling any ship lobbing shells into a city from a coastal position "a battleship ". My bad.

If we can drone strike a Hellfire missile into a driveway of a man unloading bottled water for his family, of which were also all blown to bits, I would think the same ordinance and delivery could be arranged to anchored ships lobbing shells into a city.

Just saying. Something doesn't add up here.

Good points you make. Thank you.

Maybe, or maybe not. China probably has far higher estimation of themselves than their ally to the West.

Mariupol is home to Azovstal, one of the largest steel mills in Europe. Wreck the steel mill and you seriously hurt the ability of Ukraine to provide for its steel needs in the future. And that is just one of the reasons the Russians are doing what they are to Mariupol.

My current (non-military) assessment:

Russia -1
Western Globalists -1
China +1
Ordinary Westerners -1
Ordinary Ukrainians -2
