Growing List of Aides to Putin Are Quitting Over the War — Or Have Disappeared
The New York Sun ^ | March 24, 2022 | Benny Avni

...snip... something now is rotting in Moscow. The latest sign is that one of President Putin’s oldest allies, Anatoly Chubais, today announced his resignation and decamped his country.

...snip... Mr. Chubais has been a far more important member of Mr. Putin’s inner circle than that title suggests. As the man who initially recruited Mr. Putin to the Kremlin, Mr. Chubais was until today’s defection one of the president’s darlings.

Mr. Chubais is, moreover, but the latest in a growing list of top players in Moscow who have either expressed skepticism about the war or were forced out by Mr. Putin, who blames them for failures in Ukraine. ...snip... there could be more fire than the smoke might suggest.

Russia’s wealthiest tycoon, Vladimir Potanin, warned recently that economic isolation could set the country’s economy back to the era of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. Other oligarchs have made similar warnings. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigo disappeared from public view early in the war. Top intelligence and internal security officials were fired or arrested.

...snip... “It may not be the end of Putin, but it shows that there is growing dissatisfaction in the ranks.”

The architect of Russia’s 1990s transformation away from an economy controlled by a Communist government, Mr. Chubais was tasked by President Yeltsin with overseeing privatization, which enriched some of Moscow’s movers and shakers. In the mid-1990s he gave Mr. Putin his first Kremlin job.

Overseeing Russia’s largest companies after Mr. Putin assumed the presidency, Mr. Chubais remained in government and became a top adviser to Mr. Putin. Now, however, he’s announced in a letter to a group of colleagues that he is resigning his government position and leaving Russia, citing his opposition to the war in Ukraine.

...snip...

Thanks to Biden’s superb negotiating skills, they have worked out a swap with Kamala’s fleeing staffers.

Can’t speak to the veracity of this report or others; I simply don’t know. But, I don’t think there’s any denying that the Russian economy on many levels is getting wrecked over Putin’s Ukraine ‘operation’. The Russian economy is reverting to what it was like during the Soviet era, but no longer enjoys the captive markets of the old Warsaw Pact. I have to believe that there are some very serious, very rich men who are unhappy with the current turn of events.

Is what Putin hoped to gain in Ukraine worth what it is costing Russia? Russians have to be asking themselves that question.

The Russians are being told they were being invaded by Meth addicted nazis. They think this was is good for the Russia.

Its difficult to gauge how the population of a country is feeling about a situation they know little about.

Until their kids come home, missing limbs and drug addicted themselves...they really won’t get the real story.

I know my opinion of Iraq changed when my classmates came home and started telling me what they were doing over there.

“Will someone please get that man’s finger off the nuclear button?”

I am betting that at the critical moment some Russian Generals will remove Putin’s finger from being in charge. I think their natural Russian nationalism will not sacrifice Russia for Putin’s glory.

Translation:

“We’ve got Putin on the ropes! Stay with us! We’ll get that white whale regime change in Russia that we’ve been pursuing for 25 years. Nevermind the carnage. It’s worth it, as Madeline said. We’re close. Any day now!”

"I think their natural Russian nationalism will not sacrifice Russia for Putin’s glory."

I'm tending to think the same thing as this stupid pointless war drags on.

That might be what they’re being told by Russian media, but they are not locked down like they were back in the days of the U.S.S.R. when guards stood beside copy machines to control information. They have access to the internet and outside news sources. Even North Koreans know that the world is not like what their government is telling them.

Recall the young woman who raised the ‘No War’ sign on Russian TV. And more to the point of my post, the rich oligarchs do know what this is costing them, and their opinions, for better or worse, probably counts for more than the ‘Russian masses’.

First, he accuses Ukraine of being a Nazi regime.

Then he sends in his army and the Ukrainians start killing them in large numbers. Like as if they were Nazis.

He should have believed his own hype and stayed out of there.

If you think back a few months, remember that press conference where he more or less told his top advisors to be more upbeat, like he was? They were probably telling him this Ukraine project would be an epic fail. And they were right.

Not much point in having good advisors then ignoring their advice in favor of your own misguided perceptions. At least our globalist leaders are following bad advice from bad advisors so we can share the blame a bit more equally.
