It appears to be part of the US Virgin Islands. So he owned the whole island. Theoretically, the US still had jurisdiction over it.
There are some Greek islands up for sale too. They’ve got chronic financial trouble so I suppose someone could buy one and wink-wink avoid any legal difficulties...I’m not sure about that though.
