Amazing that two Russian commanders would be speaking so frankly over an unencrypted radio channel. It's almost as if they intended for their conversation to be heard by the other side...

In WWII the U.S. broke a Japanese code and discovered they were planning to invade a U.S. held Pacific island code named "AF," but they didn't know which island "AF" was.

So the Americans sent a false message saying that Midway Island was having trouble with its fresh water supply.

Sure enough, the Japanese reported back to their HQ that "AF" was having trouble with their fresh water supply, confirming that the attack target was Midway.

“Amazing that two Russian commanders would be speaking so frankly over an unencrypted radio channel.”

Nothing says they were two “commanders”, just soldiers. It has also been widely reported that Russia’s encrypted communications system isn’t working, which is why they have been forced to use systems that are vulnerable to eavesdropping.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Western (non-Ukrainian) intelligence agencies had a hand in the breakdown of Russian communication systems.

What I'm more interested in is this line: "Basically, it’s a s***show here, I’ll put it that way,"

If it is truly an "intercepted phone call" then I would expect it to be in Russian, whereas that translation is chock full of American colloquialism. Even Brits wouldn't phrase things this way, but we're to believe that one Russian said to another Russian: "Basically it's a shit show" ? Is there a phrase in Russian that translates exactly to "shit show"? If not, why did the author of this BS use that translation instead of the actual translation?

The line reads like a millenial journalist's invented script.
