Whether what the British media is printing the truth, or not; all that matters is that Putin believes it might be true.
Putin is like now paranoid, so he doesn’t know who in his inner circle he can trust.

Things weren’t going nearly this badly in 1991 but Gorbachev was more or less deposed when he went to his vacation home in August, IIRC. He didn’t see that coming despite the seven peaceful revolutions in Warsaw Pact countries one after another. Putin must see the writing on the wall, this invasion has clearly been a fiasco on several different levels, and all the “fake news” bleats from his remaining suqqorters (see what I did there?) cannot change that.
