This comes amid reports that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions imposed on Moscow have spurred Beijing to rethink the Taiwan invasion.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is moving ahead on its "overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan issue in the new era," a report by Taipei Times, quoting a national security official, said. However, Beijing's plan still centers on peaceful methods such as "legal or other action," the report added.
Though the CCP is "in pursuit of the least costly resolution," its leaders are not averse to military action and are studying using force, taking tips from Russian invasion, and effects of potential sanctions, the report added.
The report added that Chinese President Xi Jinping will create the "most beneficial environment possible" if it decides on choosing a military solution. "That might entail elaborating on its "one China" principle, urging countries not to interfere, sowing discord among Taiwanese, guarding against potential sanctions, and forming a plan for reconstruction after the invasion," the report quoted the official.
China has always maintained that Taiwan is a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to reunify it.

The people of Ukraine have done a great service for the people of Taiwan. If Putin had taken Ukraine easily and quickly, Xi would have been under incredible pressure from elements within the CCP and the military to promptly invade Taiwan. Now he sees what is happening to the Russian army, Russia and what is likely to happen to Putin. Xi has to wonder if his army of “one child” soldiers with little or no combat experience will do any better than the Russian soldiers. Also his locally produced ships and war jets, as well as their operators have never been battle tested. Xi must have legitimate doubts that an invasion across ninety miles of open ocean would be successful. If he were do fail, Xi himself, his family and sycophants would not be treated gently. Yes. Much more academic study is needed.
This is known as starting the “cover story.”
I never understood why countries like this need to develop a story that is designed to deliver the thing they “want.” Its not like China needs to “build consensus” as the US did in Iraq.
They are going to go into Taiwan and wreck the place. And Biden is not going to lift a finger to stop them because China has nukes.
If I were Taiwan I would be loading up on the SAMs, Harpoons, and Javelins until the damn island tipped over. Or...just moving my kids to Singapore.
If China wants to take Taiwan it needs to test its military on some politically easy target.
It will have to adopt an effective NCO and officer corps which would have independent ability to improvise and improve. Not something they want to accommodate. Nazi Germany conquered much of Europe and Russia with the WW I officer corps and the help of methamphetamines. Hitler already had an experienced military leadership.
Why don’t they do it the old-fashioned way, like bribing all the elected officials?
The CIA should plant a few bombs on the Chinese side of their borders with Russia and India. Set them off at the right time and make them think their enemies started it. It would then be too late for their natural enemies to go wobbly.
They tried. It did not work. But they will try again and again. They know it is the most efficient way to defeat their enemy.
China declaring war on Russia might actually be a good power move for them.
They take territory rich in resources, and no one would condemn them for it.
Russia would immediately use nukes though, so a nuclear exchange between China and Russia would be a serious issue.
