He’s always been an American patriot. He’s interested in Ukraine not as an entity in itself, but as a territory he does not want to lose to Russia, much as the FDR poured the vast majority of American resources into Europe despite the fact that it was Japan that attacked Pearl Harbor. If the US stayed out of Europe, either Germany or Russia would rule continental Europe, and the US could not allow that to happen.

It’s not clear to me whether you support Russian interests because you’re Russian, a pan-Slav or a pan-Orthodox enthusiast or just convinced by Russian arguments that Russian territorial expansion is good for America. If it’s purely identity politics, I understand. I don’t agree with your position, but I understand. But if you’re convinced by Russian arguments that Russian empire is good for the US, let me just say that there are other arguments - that Russian land grabs are bad for the US.
