What good will all these shelters be ???
I googled flight time of an ICBM between Russia and the USA and it’s approximately 30-45 minutes.
For a Submarine launched ICBM it would as little and 15 minutes.
Remember back to 9/11 and how long it took for the USA recognize and respond to an attack ??
I know the USA has advanced multiple early warning systems in place and practice nuclear attack drills regularly.
Assuming an ICBM was launched, how long would it take for the USA or Russia for that matter to detect it, understand what it was doing, and decide to sound the alarm ??
I suspect it would take 5-10 minutes at best to respond to a ICBM launch, leaving anywhere between 5 minutes to 20 minutes for people to get to a shelter, assuming the population responded immediately, how many people would think it was a drill or a hoax ?
IMO, by the time people in a major city got to a shelter and got the doors closed it would be to late and virtually no one would be saved.
Assuming some did survive the initial blast how long would they be down in the shelter before people would start to turn on each other without proper food or water.
I could see someone living in a rural environment getting into their own shelter and surviving but in major cities I’m not sure having a shelter would matter.
Russia’s subways were designed from the beginning to be bomb shelters. The depths are astounding and you often can’t see the top of the escalators once you finally reach the bottom. Even with a nuclear blast above it is expected the fine marble finishes below will stay intact.
NYC subway construction began during a time before air raids so many tunnels are only a few feet below street level. You can hear the cars driving and sometimes even people talking right above you.
