On Wednesday, Ronald Butler’s defense attorney Matthew Diemer asked Judge Solomon to dismiss the child endangerment charges, claiming that none of the presented testimony implicated Ronald in the crimes.
“Living in a home is not enough to show legal duty of care,” Diemer argued. Testimony from both Snyder and Fisher indicated that Ronald did not participate in the girls’ lives, by cooking, bathing, reading to, or educating the children, Snyder testified.
Snyder also said she did not see Ronald abuse the children.
So, if I have a 4 year old living in my house, there’s no legal duty to care for them, feed them, bath them, brush their teeth, etc.?
Like most things regarding the law the answer is maybe. If you rent a room in a house with a 4yo I doubt you would have a legal responsibility to care for the child. You do however have a legal duty in most states to report abuse you observe in your home. Ronald may be off the hook specifically for the abuse but I doubt he avoids prison.

Again, there are exceptions, and since the overwhelming majority of two-parent families tends to be man-woman, then that rate is going to be magnified in appearance, unadjusted for controls.
The New Family Structures Study, conducted and compiled by Dr Mark Regnerus bears out these facts. It was the first such study which used a massive, statistically powerful data set of the entire population, asking the adult children of differing family structures, not the parents of young children, about outcomes. I highly recommend looking into it.

Ronald Butler was the father of at least one of the girls. He most definitely had responsibility to keep her from harm.
Most dangerous people in a child's life. Mommy's bed partner, Daddy's bed partner, Other relative, Mommy, Daddy.
A married couple where both are the biological parents of the children are the safest place for a child to be.
The next is a married couple where the children are not biologically related to the children but are in a legally binding custody agreement.
Legal agreements are not "just a piece of paper".
