Tell the Syrians, them probably being good, radical Moslems, that there are thousands of Christians they can kill for their god and ever more women they can have for their reward and entertainment after they’ve killed the men. And I’m not joking on this one.

And I find your comment of fratricide and the Syrians deserting to the EU as plausible.

If they’re recruiting Assad’s men, they’re going to be beer-drinking Alawites, i.e. not really Muslims, and considered heretics by actual Muslims. Assad’s dad purchased a tame Sunni imam who declared Alawites to be card-carrying Muslims. But in a world where even the much more numerous Shias are considered heretical, a single imam’s declaration hasn’t done much to change minds. Alawites are basically like Episcopalians in their religious beliefs - any interest in religion is purely identity-related rather than participatory.

Alawites who show up in Ukraine are gonna be looking out for #1 first and foremost. That probably means surrendering to Ukrainians who would probably be glad to funnel them to Poland, after debriefing them about Russian troop dispositions that they haven’t already gleaned from drone video and whatever intel we’ve been sharing with them.
