Tropical methane emissions contribute greatly to recent changes in global atmospheric methane growth rate

An international team of researchers has revealed that tropical terrestrial methane (CH4) emissions explain more than 80% of the observed changes in the global atmospheric methane growth rate over 2010–2019.

The study was published in Nature Communications on March 16.

CH4 is the primary non-carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gas. "On the 20-year scale, the warming effect of CH4 is 84 times that of CO2," said Prof. Liu Yi from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Methane has a short life (about one-tenth of carbon dioxide), and its emission reduction can achieve the purpose of restraining the rapid global warming in a short time.

The researchers have found that methane concentration in the atmosphere has more than doubled since the pre-industrial era, contributing 20% of present-day human-induced global warming. Tropical terrestrial CH4 emissions, as the main contributor, represent ~60% of the global totals and describe 84% of the global annual mean growth rate in the 2010s.

Meanwhile, for the first time, the researchers found strong seasonal correlations in sea surface temperature over the tropical oceans and regional variations in methane emissions (via changes in rainfall and temperature) over tropical South America and tropical Africa.

I'm not smart enough to grasp all of this article, but it seems to say Mother Nature may be responsible for climate stuff.

The real point is turning Methane into the new Ozone and implementing the same crackdown.

Methane is one byproduct of Natural Gas extraction and expensive to deal with. This angle is being slowly rolled out to regulate the Natural gas industry to make it unprofitable and of course shameful.

20% of bugger-all is still bugger-all. The whole article is based on a very mistaken assumption.

If the city dwellers got out of their cocoons and out into the real world they would see just how insignificant human activity is on a global scale.

we must outlaw tropical regions as the rotting vegetation creates methane.

Here is what you or anyone should grasp:

If they weren’t fully aware of this emission before, how can their global warming models be correct?

Nobody ever mentions the real cause of global temperature change: WATER VAPOR

Nope- they are blaming man for increasing the amount the earth gives off- they are blaming the “industrial age” for increases

[[Methane is one byproduct of Natural Gas extraction and expensive to deal with. This angle is being slowly rolled out to regulate the Natural gas industry to make it unprofitable and of course shameful]]

That is exactly what they are doing. They are setting the stage to shut down natural gas altogether.

It’s amazing that the left are so,vehemently opposed to everything that makes our lives simpler, more convenient, and more enjoyable. One woil, dhave to pretty a must miserable person to want the world to devolve backminto, back into, man living (minus fossil fuels for heat and life of,course)

“...tropical terrestrial methane (CH4) emissions explain more than 80% of the observed changes in the global atmospheric methane growth rate over 2010–2019.”

Terrestrial? I thought it was all “man made” or cows or termites.

“”On the 20-year scale, the warming effect of CH4 is 84 times that of CO2,””

Oh, oh, I can feel the return of “butt plugs” coming.

Vax 1, check.
Vax 2, check.
Vax 3, check.
Booster, check.
Double booster, check.
Mask, check.
Butt plug, check.

You may now board the airplane.

Attention passengers. Please notice the seatback safety card in the seat pocket in front of you. Please read it carefully, but more importantly, just above that pocket is a red button. Should you need to “pass gas” or you feel like it might just happen, push that button.

The AFCS (Automatic Fart Control System) will capture the expended methane and recycle it, thus saving the planet.

I don’t think you can blame real cause of temperature change on water vapor. I give that distinction to the sun. Water vapor IS the main atmospheric component that absorbs solar wavelengths. In fact, H2O absorbs nearly all those wavelengths that methane would absorb rendering that compound less than negligible in affecting the climate.

The climate will change, always has, always will. Warmer is preferable.

...Mother Nature may be responsible for climate stuff.

If every human disappeared tomorrow, the Earth would continue in its slightly irregular orbit of the Sun, with its little wobble, as it has since God set it spinning. Winter, spring, summer and fall would progress as always. Natural cycles would continue; global temperatures would change periodically, glaciers would advance and retreat, ocean levels would rise and fall, deserts would become savannahs and savannahs would become forests or wetlands. Some forests and wetlands would revert to desert. Over eons of time tectonic forces would push up mountains and volcanoes would erupt, and over more eons they would be worn down by wind and rain.

This would continue until the day of the Lord’s choosing, when our Sun goes nova and reduces the planet to ash.

The main difference is that there would be no liberals around to lie about it.

Atmospheric methane has indeed almost doubled in forty years or so. From one part per billion to 1.9 parts per billion. Yes, That’s Billion with a B. To say it accounts for “20% of man made global warming” is not data-based, it’s just a fake form of statistics called “Attribution analysis..” Since it operates in the same wavelengths as other greenhouses gases, it’s separate contribution is immeasurably small.
