Ukraine REJECTS Russian peace talks proposal to become 'neutral' like Sweden - and demands guarantees that international forces will 'prevent attacks' in future

Ukraine today rejected a Russian peace talk proposal to become 'neutral' like Sweden or Austria and instead demanded guarantees that international forces will 'prevent attacks' in the future.

'Ukraine is now in a direct state of war with Russia. As a result, the model can only be "Ukrainian" and only on legally verified security guarantees,' its top negotiator Mikhailo Podolyak said in comments published by President Volodymyr Zelensky's office.

He called for a legally binding security agreement, signed by international partners, who would 'not stand aside in the event of an attack on Ukraine, as they do today.'

The Kremlin earlier Wednesday said that a neutral Ukraine along the lines of Sweden or Austria was being discussed at talks with Kyiv to end three weeks of fighting in Ukraine.

'This is an option that is being discussed now and that can be considered as a compromise,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

His comments came after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said neutrality was taking centre stage at the talks and that Moscow and Kyiv were 'close to agreeing' the wording of an agreement on neutrality.

They shouldn’t disarm and be in a position where Russia can attack again.

Lavrov’s “compromise” is that Ukraine will only be able to keep something like 20,000 troops after the war. Ridiculous.

This is complete and total bullshit and the Russians know it. Our deep state is too embedded in that country to just give up and go home.

I wonder if Putin will ever do this sort of thing again. His loss of esteem worldwide cant be underestimated. He’s take Russia backwards by decades. And that is if he wins this conflict. So, maybe accepting neutrality wouldnt be so bad for Ukraine

The only way Ukraine can become neutral like Sweden is to arm themselves like Switzerland.
Sweden still have too many gun restrictions to be a good example.

If correctly reported, then the war enlarges thereby. Russia against "international partners" i.e. NATO. Whatever happens, the notion of neutrality like the notion of peace becomes unachievable, without Russia's surrender, a gambit in this deadly game which seems unlikely

This arsehole was talking about neutrality himself a few hours ago and now flip-flops again. If I were Russia, I’d stop wasting time talking to him.

Putin has lost but it isn’t visible yet. He is an international criminal.

This is the normal Soviet mode of negotiations, most perfectly seen in the peace negotiations of the Korean war. The Soviets taught and coached the Koreans and everyone else on their side how to negotiate. The Ukrainians may have long memories and are giving it a try.

Some that appear good are evil, some that appear evil are good. Some alive are dead, some dead are alive.

In the below meme, add FSB to CCP. Oh, and add MSM/CIA/DNC/GOPe as well.

From the Russian standpoint, why should they sign an ‘agreement’ that allows Ukraine to simply re-arm and possibly pose a threat again.

Its not really that hard to own a gun in Sweden. All you have to do is join a gun club for six months and then you can buy one.

If you have a conviction for a crime of violence, drive drunk or are under a restraining order you can get your licence revoked, but even then, you can appeal a police decision and many bans are revoked by the courts.

23 guns per 100 population means Sweden has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world. Not as high as the US but pretty high by global standards. Sweden also has conscription, so a high proportion of the population is proficient in firearms.

An armed Ukraine was never a threat to Russia. Russia has been the one attacking Ukraine, not the other way around.

A compromise could be along the lines of NATO guarantees for Ukraine but no NATO troops in Ukraine. Along with this Ukraine should insist that there are no Russian troops in Belarus.

Ukraine should demand to be like Switzerland, Russian give up territory so Ukraine can be surrounded by other none aggressive countries and act as a buffer between Ukraine and Russia.

Perhaps, but that’s not how Russia now sees it, so I guess this keeps going...
