Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine must accept it will not become a member of NATO - a statement that will be music to the ears of Vladimir Putin and could pave the way for some kind of peace deal between the warring nations.
Zelensky, who has become a symbol of resistance to Russia's onslaught over the last 20 days, said today that 'Ukraine is not a member of NATO' and that 'we have heard for years that the doors were open, but we also heard that we could not join. It's a truth and it must be recognised.'
His statement, while making no firm commitments, will be seen as further opening the door to some kind of peace deal between Ukraine and Russia after negotiators hailed 'substantial' progress at the weekend - without giving any idea what such a deal would look like.
Ahead of the invasion, Putin had been demanding guarantees that Ukraine would never be admitted to NATO along with the removal of all the alliance's troops and weapons from ex-Soviet countries. After being rebuffed by Kyiv, Washington and NATO he launched his 'special military operation' to 'demilitarise' and 'de-Nazify' the country.
Russian negotiators have softened their stance a little since then, saying they want Ukraine to declare neutrality, disarm, recognise Crimea as part of Russia and recognise the whole of the Donbass as independent. Ukraine has been demanding a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of all Russian forces. Talks have been ongoing this week and Moscow has made no mention of wider demands on NATO in recent days.

Ze is too windy. After he recently demanded the unconditional Russian surrender, Ukrainian flags are going down in Russian-occupied cities. Nobody guarantees that Ukraine will remain as a nation. The guy is a liar and can’t be trusted.
The UN and NATO are useless.
Whoever has the most Facebook Friends doesn’t win? Shocking.
And Biden is supposedly going to Europe
1938 and Munich come to mind.
Looks like Ukraine is being told to surrender.
Eastern Europe needs an alternative to NATO. Perhaps something based on the Three Seas Initiative.
Israel told him last week.
If negotiated properly this could stop Putin’s march and safeguard many countries. If that happens Russia can be pulled into the fold of sane nations - as with Japan and Germany after World War II. Tell Putin, “here’s the path to peace, sanity, and having a wealthy country”...
Yeah, it’s a dream but it’d be better having Russia with us or neutral - if we have to take on Iran/China....
Apprently they all learned nothing from the 1930s.
No one wants to go to war against Russia. Ukraine in NATO will lead to another world war, perhaps nuclear.
This reminds me of how the British Establishment thought Htiler was someeone they could “do busness with” in the 1930s.
Apprently a lot of “Conservative Inc learned nothing from the 1930s
Very sad. Sickened by the anti Zelensky idiots here who apparently don’t see our world position is collapsing under Biden.
Afghanistan, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, China, North Korea, oil and energy, inflation, many others.
It’s going to hell in a hand basket.
Don’t be foolish this is a Biden disaster. Trump, as he’s stated, would never have allowed any of this.
He’s p!ssed off because the rest of the world showed how little he or Ukraine ever did for them.
Putin is going to be dead of cancer within 2 years. My points have always been end the war:
1. No NATO for Ukraine
2. Let Putin keep Crimea
3. Ukraine keep water flowing to Crimea and charges Russia for the water
4. Independence for Russian controlled Donbass (it’s a craphole anyway)
5. Russia gets the hell out of the rest of Ukraine and Putin dies without his land bridge to Crimea as well as without his crown jewel Odessa.
Exactly. This is an Obama-Biden disaster. And it wouldn’t have happened under Trump.
Bingo!
We can all play the nah nah you’re not in NATO game. It’s meaningless. The war in Europe has started and it foreshadows the war coming in Asia.
Surviving 3 years more of Biden is uncertain.
But all that money laundering! Who's going to take up the slack?
I’m not talking sugar and sweetness - I’m talking
AFTER World War II - hard nosed reality “after World War II”... Today both Germany and Japan are friends.
