Rep. Scott Perry is endorsing Jeremy Munson in the special House election in Minnesota, signaling likely Freedom Caucus support for the Republican legislator over Jennifer Carnahan, the former state GOP chairwoman and widow of Rep. Jim Hagedorn.
Hagedorn died Feb. 17 after a bout with cancer, sparking a special election in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, with the primary set for May 24 and the general contest scheduled for Aug. 9. Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican and chairman of the influential House Freedom Caucus, announced Monday he was backing Munson over Carnahan and several other GOP primary contenders in a bid to coalesce grassroots conservatives behind the state representative’s candidacy.

And coincidentally, it's another widow named Carnahan. Remember the MO Senate race of 2000, when Jean Carnahan's husband (the Democrat nominee) died in a plane crash just days before the election, and the people voted for the dead guy (with shenanigans in St. Louis) and he won, then his wife Jean was appointed to his seat (since he was dead).
And we got Debbie Dingell, who took the seat of her husband John Dingell when he died in 2015, who took the seat of his father when he died in 1955.
And Muriel Humphrey, wife of Hubert Humphrey, etc. etc.
100% correcto!
Never underestimate the sympathy vote. Happens a lot. Sonny Bono’s wife and Missouri Congressman Emerson’s widow Jo Ann, among others.
I’m not surprised that they endorsed Munson over Carnahan. She was the former state chair of the Minnesota GOP. her tenure was not a good one and she proved to be a less than desirable leader.
Because of those traits, actions and who she associated herself with, she was ousted late last year. Here’s a good article that sums up her tenure as party chair:

KSTP is the local ABC TV affiliate in the Twin Cities.
Plus, I’d be quite surprised that find out that she even lives in the district. At last check, she had a condo in downtown Minneapolis. However, she may have sold it after being thrown out as party chair and moved down into her husband’s district.
Yes, Mary Bono. Another good example. Forgot about her.
We’ve had enough Lurleens.
I’ve also never liked the nomination automatically being given to the widow (by the party insiders coalescing around her and pushing the others to the side). Let her run but let the most conservative win, sympathy vote not withstanding.
I agree with your assessment of things. While I will attest that my limited experiences with Carnahan’s efforts during the 2020 campaign season were quite positive - her early departure from being the head of the party is a cloud over her that the libs will hound her with every step of the way.
Munson is an outstanding candidate for that congressional seat. I’m friends with our local state house representative who is in the “New Republican Caucus” that Munson and our rep started because of their concerns about RINOs driving the agenda of the legislative sessions. I’m thrilled he is in the running for congress (but bummed we might lose him in the MN legislature.)
Cindy McCain was trying to get John’s Senate seat.
Even the lame AZ GOP said no.
