China has zero claim to Taiwan. It has never been part of the Chinese Communist nation, and was the destination of the Nationalist forces who were forced out of China in 1949 - the year the CCP “United” China by force after we defeated Japan.

To say China has some claim to Taiwan is spreading the CCPs propaganda.

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would crater American tech dominance and military readiness

But would it really? The only reason why China would want to invade Taiwan is to take over its chip manufacturing, not destroy it.

With all of the trade we have already with the CCP, it would seem that after a turbulent transition period, it would be back to "business as usual" under new ownership.

“none are produced in the United States”

That’s the problem.

Everything else is HorseShiite.

We’ve off-shored everything over the past 30 years. Including our brains.

“Financialization” instead of investment -

Also, China has a stronger claim on Taiwan than Russia does on Ukraine.

This is false. Taiwan has been out of Chinese control for 125 years, and when it was under 19th century imperial control, that control was very weak and distant.

Culturally, Ukraine and Taiwan have similar connections to larger Russian and Chinese culture. Taiwanese language, a spoken dialect, is quite different from Mandarin Chinese.

Taiwan, unlike Ukraine, is not a kleptocracy, nor a subject of recent Soros/CIA coups, but rather, has spent the last 30+ years as a truly independent country.

Its great benefit in the past has been that China has been too weak threaten it, and US policy has also limited our meddling in its government.

Taiwan's success is because it has been LEFT ALONE

Only 10 to 15% of Taiwanese descend from the Chinese Nationalists who arrived after WW II.

The largest group, probably a majority, are Hokkla speakers who migrated from Fujian in the 17th Century. They, along with other Han Chinese immigrants prior to 1895 are at least 75% of the population.

There is a small group of indigenous people from before Chinese immigration.

Taiwan (Formosa) was under the same government as the mainland for 4 years—1945 to 1949—after the US defeated Japan.

Two startup US companies, Graphcore and Cerebras, have developed the most advanced AI processors in the world and are game changers in the pursuit of human like AI capabilities. Both were made possible by the advanced wafer fabrication capabilities of TSCM which is the only company in the world with the tooling and manufacturing skills to build their designs. Losing this advanced technology to the CCP could change the leadership in AI technology and make us dependent on them for decades.

While “advanced semiconductor technology” may be very important commercially, it is not clear that it matters very much militarily.

Aren’t military parts usually special production, probably at 40 nanometer and coarser nodes that meet environmental specifications for temperature, shock, vibration, radiation, static, tamper resistance, reliability, lifetime, etc.?

Do you really want a TSMC 7 nm part in a battlefield radio, much less an aircraft?

LOL. At the end of WWII, and During the Chinese Civil War.

China's "legal" claim to Taiwan is strong - even the USA has continuously recognized it over every Administration But its a de facto independent country - far more than Ukraine ever was.

If China had better designs, TSCM would build the chips for them too.

I sense in a real, hot war - TSCM would become nearly useless. Its not an oil well or a uranium mine. If its buildings and equipment were not destroyed, its management and intellectual capital would be scattered. All China can do is deny TSCM to the West, which is very serious. But they could not operate it as before.

“...China has a stronger claim on Taiwan than Russia does on Ukraine...”

WRONG!

The truth is that China belongs to Taiwan.

What this article did not seem to mention is that Industrial NEON is required for microprocessor manufacturing. There are three major sources (over 90%) of industrial NEON in the world today. China, Russia and Ukraine.

The US has essential strategic interests in Asia.

And no interests whatsoever in Ukraine or the rest of eastern Europe.

Of course, our brilliant leadership will take absolutely no measures to counter this obvious threat until it’s a crisis. (Hint: It is already a crisis)

Indeed, what’s called for (and was called for the minute the CCP seized HK if not earlier) is much like Russia’s relocation of vital industries away from Western Russia in WW2. Chip manufacturing has be pulled out of Taiwan with top-level haste.

These s**theads NEVER see this stuff coming.
