Then when those black and Hispanics students who were otherwise not qualified attend the elite school, they will either be crushed by the coursework or have to be handheld and tutored all the way through. The third alternative is to dump everything which made the school special and make it the same as every other school in the district.

I used to get fund-raising calls from my alma mater, UCSB. The calls were nearly always made by female students who were quite pleasant to talk to. I’d tell them what UCSB was like in the middle 60s, how much was charged—always good for a gasp of disbelief—and then they’d tell me all of the wonderful things my money would fund; tutors for students who were struggling.

I know I’m a geezer, but we sure didn’t have tutors. And the profs weren’t shy about issuing low grades, I can testify from personal experience.

I haven’t donated in years.
