White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday condemned Russia for what he called the "shocking and horrifying" killing of an American journalist in Ukraine by Russian forces and vowed the U.S. would respond with "appropriate consequences" once the Biden administration obtains more information about the death.
"This is obviously shocking and horrifying, and I've just learned about it as I came onto air here, so I will be consulting with my colleagues, we'll be consulting with the Ukrainians to determine how this happened and then to measure and execute appropriate consequences as a result of it," Sullivan told "Face the Nation" when asked about the consequences would be for the Russians killing an American.
"This is part and parcel of what has been the brazen aggression on the part of the Russians where they have targeted civilians, they have targeted hospitals, they have targeted places of worship and they have targeted journalists," he continued.

A journalist in a combat zone is killed and all hell breaks loose while 13 soldiers killed in Afghanistan warrant hardly a mention.
Being an idiot must be the prerequisite to be part of the Biden administration
Journalist killed? I thought the article said he worked for the New York Times...
My first thought, exactly!
I agree with General WT Sherman.
He went into a war zone on his own without NYT sending him there supposedly.
It is a risk.
“A journalist in a combat zone is killed and all hell breaks loose while 13 soldiers killed in Afghanistan warrant hardly a mention.”
Don’t even know if he was a ‘journalist’ as he was using an ID from the NY Times that the newspaper wouldn’t support (it was for one assignment 7 years ago). So they likely figured he was a spy and they* dealt with him.
*still don’t know why ‘they’ are, but given that the US habit of misinformation, he was probably killed by Ukrainians.
“Shocking and horrifying”, yet they have no details…
Was he killed by the Russians? Ukrainian authoritiess have assured us of this. However, other witnesses say he was killed after crossing a checkpoint manned by Ukrainian forces, many of whom were handed an assault rifle just a couple of weeks ago and have no military training.
Oh, and there's been plenty of acts of brazen aggression committed by the Ukrainians against civilians and separatists in the Donbas over the past eight years.
See 3, 10 and 13.
I am NOT SHOCKED. Not shocked at all that a freelancer wandering around a war zone gets killed.
It is worth mentioning that Sullivan is a liar. There is an interview of the slain journalist’s partner from hospital on Telegram. It is clear that they were shot at the Ukrainian checkpoint.
My guess is they did not target him for being an American. They targeted him because he was in front of them.
As if some Russian soldier, shooting at everything that moves in a war zone, gives a Sh!t about someone wearing fake credentials.
The media in this country really needs to get over itself. Journalists in a war zone are not “special.”
IMO the photo of his body looks as though he was killed in an explosion, a bit more indiscriminate than being shot.
Idiot is a mild word.
