It was a Malaysian airliner.
It was IMHO a drunken doofus in some militia at fault, and, up the chain, it was an irresponsible idiot in the Russian MOD that gave such troglodytes such a powerful weapon as a Buk system, capable of targeting airliners at 30,000 feet.
