EU leaders fail to agree on deadline to phase out Russian energy......(2027?)

As European Union leaders wrapped their two-day summit in Versailles, France, on Friday, they did so without reaching consensus on one key issue: 'when' to end the bloc’s outsize energy dependence on Russia. ....after two days of intense discussions regarding both the future of Ukraine and to bloc’s own dependence on Russia, leaders failed to settle on a firm date as to when.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested the bloc commit to 2027 as a firm deadline for ending the imports.

Instead, members slow-walked the decision even further, asking Brussels on Friday to put forward a proposal in May.

“It’s a very difficult situation that, on the one hand, we have these financial sanctions that are very hard, but on the other hand, we are supporting and actually financing Russia’s war purchasing oil and gas and other fossil fuels from Russia,” Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin told reporters ahead of the summit in Versailles. “We have to get rid of the fossil fuels coming from Russia as soon as possible.”

The only ways the Greens there will let them remove their reliance on Russian energy is one of two options:

1) Go back to the Middle Ages as far as living standards are concerned.

2) Eliminate the demand for the 50% of their energy now received from Russia by eliminating 50% of their people. That way the remaining people can continue to live at Western standards on the non-Russian energy they presently have access to.

For today’s generation of European leaders, the above is a very difficult decision, so I can see why they’re pushing it out. Part of the problem for #2 may be figuring out which 50% to keep around beyond the obvious ones, and one solution to that may be a Chinese-style Social Credit System, but that will still take a while to fully implement.

From the article:

To replace their dependence, leaders have proposed seeking out additional liquefied natural gas partnerships and speeding up the rollout of renewable gas, solar energy, and other energy-saving measures, according to draft materials published by the EU commission earlier this week.

If I were Russia, I’d block now and see them falling back to the middle ages.

Renewable Gas? That’s a new one. Anyone have an idea how that works (without getting too graphic)?

“If I were Russia, I’d block now and see them falling back to the middle ages.”

They’re obviously holding tight there, probably a last resort prior to having to widen the war.

While the Ukraine conflict continues Putins going to do as he did before - watch him garner and utlize whatever cards he’s held back - and there is no doubt he has them, the man didn’t go into this conflict without lining things up he could and would do as it moves along.

Putin got played before he’s not going to let that happen this time around - he’s going to be in the game as things move along. Watch who he’s seeing and where he’s going - the man moves fast and steady when he’s up against International Leaders in situations as he’s in now.

“Eliminate the demand for the 50% of their energy now received from Russia by eliminating 50% of their people”

That is some of the European “leaders” are warmongers.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette—and blaming Putin for it is doubleplusgood!

Well, the Euros promised “total economic war”. It sucks for the Russians to lose iPhones and Louis Vuitton. but it sucks many times more for the Euros to lose fuel and food.

I doubt they will unload Russian oil at all.....not until they’ve all gone green - and the push against that is strong.

Have the Russians really lost iPhones, or the use of their existing iPhones?

Interesting.....

Still they are hardwired to Russia via the oil and I don’t see how they can make the switch and the expense of, not to mention how to go about it, anytime soon. Considering all the countries involved to get an agreement itself is going to take no small amount of time.
