Not just the religious right. Anyone that is not a leftist is vilified, particularly if they are running for president. Look how Romney got torched when he ran, and he seems to oppose republicans more than democrats. It’s the media (and academia too) that does not reflect the moderate beliefs of the majority of the country, but people like Maher whose deeper inclinations were probably more of the civil libertarians more than marxist are questioning why they ever accepted the marxist koolaid after they see the totalitarian side showing it’s colors. Mahar has come out a number of times in the last year or two to question cancel culture and censorship.
It’s the media that has been stealth-fully trying to push the Overton window left for a looong time. Sometimes they are not so stealth (MSNBC) but overall sometimes they get a little too aggressive and people start to get anxious and realize something is wrong.
