Russia says its businesses can steal patents from anyone in ‘unfriendly’ countries
The Washington Post ^ | March 8, 2022 | Zina Pozen

Russia has effectively legalized patent theft from anyone affiliated with countries “unfriendly” to it, declaring that unauthorized use will not be compensated.

McDonald’s said Tuesday that it would temporarily close its 850 restaurants in Russia, a significant decision for a company that gets 9 percent of its revenue from Russia and Ukraine. Without trademark protections, Russia could “take those McDonald’s that got shut down and … just let local operators operate the restaurants and call them McDonald’s,” Gerben said.

Russia’s removal of intellectual property protections during wartime is not without precedent. Smithsonian Magazine describes how the German company Bayer lost its American patent on aspirin as the U.S. government seized property from firms associated with its enemies.

If not for the decades of gaslighting, Putin could have been out long time ago. The Nork example is irrelevant here.

Putin was KGB, just who do you think it was doing the gaslighting?! Pulease!!! Russia needs someone who builds things as a leader, not some guy who specializes in disinformation, gaslighting, and conspiracy theories to try to distract people from the unhappy state of their own prospects. Putin was a spy, he was all about head-games, not reality.

You don’t think North Korea is relevant? Than just take a look at how China tries to throw its weight around in any number of other countries, Australia is an example, so is Lithuania. Heck, I’ve even dealt with their bossy censoriousness on my own ground in my own country over requirements for English majors, that are looking for employment locally.

China is winning. Who is going to invest in the West anymore, where everything is nationalized on a whim?

Not so much, China is a bubble and far too dependent on other countries R&D. The people most influenced by China are the worst actors in the cancellation of Russia I think you’ll find. Slavs are blood of our blood and bone of our bone, and one of our largest ethnic groups in the United States. Are they planning to cancel all of them?!

The cancelation already took place, leaving zero place for sympathy to the West, sorry.

Also the West isn’t doing the nationalizing, Russia is. The Western firms are pulling out of Russia and now Russia is contemplating nationalizing them and pilfering their trademarks and patents. Personally I was mourning the loss of Russian art supplies, but nobody here is going to nationalize them, I’ll just have to go with a different company instead.
