Read up on the 1998 midterms. That one was supposed to be a blowout for the Republicans. And... it wasn’t.

I don’t remember anyone thinking the 1998 midterms would be a blowout for the Republicans.

That was the year of Clinton’s impeachment, and the media gathering the wagons around in a circle because it was all about sex.

It was the year that I joined Free Republic, though. The FReeper March on Washington. Doctor Raoul and his Satan costume with the sign that said “Bill Clinton married my sister!” I do remember I became emerged in politics here. We had high hopes here, but no one expected it wouldn’t be easy.

The economy was rocking. The Internet Bubble was going strong. Republicans had majorities in the House and Senate. Why was there supposed to be a blow out?

That's due to ignorance or wishful thinking by Newt. He, being the history professor, decided the Republicans wouldn't have to try because he claimed history would repeat itself with the party in power blah, blah, blah.
