Officials: Chernobyl site off power grid, generators on

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities say the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear plant, site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, has been knocked off the power grid. Emergency generators are now supplying backup power.

The state communications agency says the outage could put systems for cooling nuclear material at risk.

The cause of the damage to the power line serving Chernobyl was not immediately clear, but it comes amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The site has been under control of Russian troops since last week.

Ukrainian grid operator Ukrenerho said that according to the national nuclear regulator, all Chernobyl facilities are without power and the diesel generators have fuel for 48 hours. Without power the “parameters of nuclear and radiation safety” cannot be controlled, it said.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the grid supplying electricity is damaged and called for a cease-fire to allow for repairs.

I was astonished to learn, via many of the You Tube docs out there, that this site was still manned. I thought it was completely shut down and dormant.

Since that’s not the case, is there really a risk of further damage or is this just the media?

It’s not being used. There’s still an exclusion zone around it. Why is this a problem?

Hello? I thought Chernobyl was abandoned?

Power cut at Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear plant: operator

On February 24, Russia invaded Ukraine and seized the defunct plant, site of a 1986 disaster that killed hundreds and spread radioactive contamination west across Europe.

On Tuesday the UN atomic watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that the site was no longer transmitting data and voiced concern for staff working under Russian guard.

More than 2,000 staff still work at the plant as it requires constant management to prevent another nuclear disaster.

I just recently watched the documentary Chernobyl again.

That fuel has been cooling for at least a couple of decades. "And so that decay heat is not that significant," Lyman said. "But still, if there was disruption to cooling … or if there was a breach of the pool that led to draining water, then that fuel could conceivably heat up to the point where it might burn. That's probably the biggest threat."

Same principle for a power outage, pumps would not be able to supply water and the water would boil off.

Without digging into it,,,I thinkg the shut down remaining reactor(s) are still cooling off....hence the need to keep the cooling pumps running.

Not abandoned. The reactors are encased in concrete but the cooling ponds are still actively cooled.

Shut down and dormant? I don't think you can dormant nuclear energy. More like they poured concrete over it and walked away for a million years. But don't worry, Bill Gates wants to put one of these next to your house to fuel your new EV you'll be forced to buy.

Pootie does not care. Just another weapon to save ethnic Russians from themselves. One has to wonder if the other one or two plants under Russian control will eventually suffer the same fate.

Such combined nuclear disasters could effectively end Ukraine wheat production, if radioactivity spreads across the country

“Ukrainian authorities say the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear plant, site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, has been knocked off the power grid.”

How can a “decommissioned” (presumably for close to 40 years) be “knocked off the power grid”, and this be news? Decommissioned plants do not produce power. There’s no reason for them to be on “the grid.”

Lots of work still being done there (radioactive waste removal/containment)...over 150 techs per shift:

Or it may just be more BS. There is so much BS flying around the Ukraine conflict that it is hard to tell if anything being reported is remotely true. The Ukranian, Russia and western media are all very corrupt. I have trouble believing anything being put out by any side in this mess. I am old enough to remember a US Congresscritter falling for the “Ghost of Kiev” story or the Ukranian bio labs “rumor” which was a rumor until yesterday when our DoS admitted the labs exist. Lots of BS on all sides in this.

Your reply does not respond to what I said.

How many workers there, how much heat energy is being expended by ongoing nuclear fuel decay, how much monitoring, maintenance, rehabilitation, remediation, has nothing, nothing, to do with “on the grid”.

“On the grid” means the plant is producing electricity and is feeding electrical energy through wires to be used elsewhere.

What I quoted implies that (1) this “decommissioned” plant was “on the grid” supplying electrical power for productive use prior to the Russian invasion, (2) it is no longer “on the grid”, and (3) this change in status from “on the grid” to “off the grid” occurred after the Russian invasion. The makes no sense.

OK, I figured it out. What they are saying is that Chernobyl is no longer being SUPPLIED with power from outside sources, not that it is no longer PRODUCING power.

Yep, onsite remediation only. Apparently they are keeping fuel rods, etc. cool/non-reactive in cooled water...water cooled by electricity from offsite...(or 48 hours of generator power).
