NYS "Highway and Bridge Trust fund", your tax dollars, very little ends up on road repairs
Albany Times Union ^ | 2/28/22 | Greg Floyd

As you travel across the Capital Region, you can see that many of our highways and bridges are in need of repair.

That's where the NYS dedicated highway and bridge trust fund should come in. It's funded by all sorts of taxes and fees - the gas tax you pay every time you fill up your car, vehicle registration fees, car rental taxes and more.

Just one problem -- the dedicated highway and bridge trust fund is dedicated to just about anything but highways and bridges.

Here are the numbers: 40.1% goes to debt service, a whopping 42.7 percent to state operational costs, and just 17.2 percent to take care of the highways and bridges you travel over every day.

Honestly, we should be able to prosecute elected officials for mismanagement.

Gas taxes are supposed to fix roads, instead they fund government largess, it's criminal.

Every single government program a billion dollars or more should be audited after a year to make sure the money was spent as intended and nothing diverted.
I not, then jail time.

Social Security operates almost exactly like that. I know (not just saying).

We now pay sales tax of 10% of the inflated cost of goods.

60 years ago we paid 3% on the cost of goods then.

We are paying an inflation adjusted 3x real increase in taxes for far less than we got 60 years ago.

Government growth is a killer. Once upon a time there was a party that pushed smaller government.

Yes, they take in gas taxes, tolls, registration fees, fines...Then they squander the money.

Eventually, the roads and bridges start to crumble so they have to float a multi-billion dollar bond issue for 'infrastructure'.

And for this, they want a pat on the back.

The NYS Department of Transportation sent us a statement saying “”NYSDOT maximizes the use of highway and bridge funding in order to bring the most possible improvements to our infrastructure to enhance safety, mobility and resiliency, and any suggestion otherwise is categorically false.”

Read it slowly and let your lips move......................

can you measure the outcome?

Here are the numbers: 40.1% goes to debt service

Debt service for what? The general fund? Or to pay for bonds sold to build roads? If the state borrowed $100 million dollars to build a road and is paying it off over 30 years would it appear on this debt service line?

I have no doubt that the rest of the state is skimming from a earmarked tax, but those numbers aren't enough to justify outrage yet.

They wait until a bridge collapses, and people are killed, and then put a financial bandaid on it all.

Yet, I see PENNDoT Road Crews working on bridges and overpasses around the York area, almost every day.

This is why we need Bidens bill bark butter, so the amount going to infrastructure can be deducted from the highway fund and repurposed for pet projects. Exactly the same thing that happens to money previously allocated for education when funds from the lottery start coming in

That's exactly what they do, a total inept government management system.

while visiting friends came home on a rainy night could not see the lines on the highway had no idea where I was shoulder highway or other, the roads themselves are a disgrace and these rat politicians keep feeding the do nothings, illegals and more social programs for the those with their hands out. Accountability is zero. They have the trifecta in government and they don’t give a rats a##

Not to mention potholes that swallow cars. Bridges that are falling down. It's a total shirking of responsibility.

If we did they would all quit and go to work for the Mexican Cartel or the Mafia.

There is a huge, huge problem with our form of government.

Imagine you have a business and you hire a manager to run things for you, so you have more time to play golf and watch football. You give him a contract for two or 4 years and the freedom to run the business at his own discretion, with you having little to say during the time of the contract, and not paying much attention to how the business is being run. How well do you think your business is going to do?

We give our public “servants” way too much unsupervised power. Mostly our fault. We should give them just enough money and discretion to do their job, and then watch them like a hawk and hold their feet to the fire. The left does an excellent job of this. They keep their congresscritters on very short leash.

But, we rather play golf and watch football.
