Trump's praise of Putin, 'America First' view tested by war

WASHINGTON (AP) — From the earliest days of his first presidential campaign, Donald Trump aggressively challenged the pillars of Republican foreign policy that defined the party since World War II.

He mocked John McCain's capture during the Vietnam War, validated autocrats with his platitudes, questioned longtime military and security alliances and embraced an isolationist worldview. And to the horror of many GOP leaders at the time, it worked, resonating with voters who believed, in part, that a bipartisan establishment in Washington had brokered trade deals that hurt American workers and recklessly stumbled into so-called “forever wars.”

But Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine is posing a serious test for Trump and his “America First” doctrine at a moment when he is eyeing another presidential run and using this year's midterm elections to keep bending the GOP to his will. He's largely alone in his sustained praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin as “smart,” an assessment he reiterated last week during speeches to donors and conservative activists. His often deferential vice president, Mike Pence, split with him on the issue late Friday.

“The plans of the Left had been in progress for a long time, by then. They depended on international forces like Russia and NATO. Absent the “Russian collusion” BS, I expect Trump probably would have begun the dissolution of NATO, an albatross around the neck of MAGA.”

The very essence of institutional Trump hatred.

He was going to overturn the world order.

As Sundance said, multiple trillions of dollars were (are) at stake. Along with the most basic and fundamental levers of worldwide power.

“Trump’s praise of Putin” is a GD lie.

But then again, they always LIE about him, what he says and what he means.

But it is all made up BS.

Note: Trump didn’t “praise” Putin by calling him smart.

I’d say the power elite over here isn’t much better than Russian oligarchy. Look at all the propaganda they use. The government bureaucracy and its friendly media are just tools to control our lives, our words, our elections, our information and our opinion. Something they don’t want you to know?
They redact the hell out it or lose the documents. Vote for the wrong guy with a different plan for America? They fix the election. The court rules against them? They threaten the judges or pack the court. Protest too hard? They keep you in a filthy DC jail. The one thing they haven’t done yet is threaten to use nukes on us. But that lying SOB threaten tanks and planes if we get too frisky. That’s just the political stuff. That doesn’t include the economic tyranny they impose. It’s not about serving the people or keeping us informed.

If Trump is “praising” Putin we need some quotes that actually do it. Saying Putin is “smart” is not praising him. Putin mapped out a strategy to enrich his country, take advantage of the West’s ineptness, bided his time, etc. That does indicate he is indeed smart - that isn’t praising him. Hitler was also a genius / smart in manipulating political institutions to rise to power - that isn’t “praise” of Hitler to acknowledge that.

The never ending false narrative of the MSM.

Exactly. Trump never praised Putin. He basically said compared to a senile old fool, Putin is a genius.

The more these toads in the media trash him the more determined I’ll be to vote for him...

That's exactly how I feel. I voted for him in 2016 with some sense of trepidation but it just seemed like he was upsetting the right people. Voted for him enthusiastically in 2020.
