i agree. it is bizarre.
the media has been pushing the entire angle on invasion aggressively for a month before it actually happened. not because it was newsworthy, but to focus the population on it (and not covid).
now we have politicians calling for this, of the head of a nuclear state.
this can only contribute to escalation. they know that, therefore that is their intent.
my simplistic assumption is russia was put into a position where they would conclude if they didn’t invade now, ukraine would be joining nato (and eventually nato air power/defenses would be next to russia), with the ultimate intent to crush russia.
the economic actions taken against russia are world-changing, and not in a good way. the US is going to pay a nasty price for them near-term when the dollar gets dropped as a reserve currency in the coming years.
whether crushing the US enough to skip elections in november is an added bonus remains to be seen. the nasty stuff hasn’t happened yet, but it might.
