As Russia is trying to cut off the flow of information in Ukraine by attacking its communications infrastructure, the British news outlet BBC is revisiting a broadcasting tactic popularized during World War II: shortwave radio.
The BBC said this week that it would use radio frequencies that can travel for long distances and be accessible on portable radios to broadcast its World Service news in English for four hours a day in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and in parts of Russia.
“It’s often said truth is the first casualty of war,” Tim Davie, director-general of the BBC, said in a statement. “In a conflict where disinformation and propaganda is rife, there is a clear need for factual and independent news people can trust.”
Shortwave radio has been a go-to vehicle to reach listeners in conflict zones for decades, used to deliver crackling dispatches to soldiers in the Persian Gulf war, send codes to spies in North Korea and pontificate through the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. But more modern forms of radio along with the internet eventually pushed shortwave out of favor; the BBC retired its shortwave transmissions in Europe 14 years ago.

The BBC’s coverage has led to complaints from Russian officials. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, said during a briefing broadcast by RT, the Kremlin-backed Russian media outlet, that Russia was the victim of “unprecedented information terrorism” that was “devoted to discrediting Russian actions” and “creating hysteria around Ukrainian events.”
The BBC “plays a determined role in undermining the Russian stability and security,” Ms. Zakharova said, without providing evidence.
Early Friday, BBC’s Russian service reported problems accessing its site in Russia.

I’d believe Brandon is Einstein before I’d believe anything from the New York Slimes.
PUCK FUTIN.
For fun tune in your shortwave radio to 4625KH and listen to the Buzzer. If anything is going to go down in Russia it will be heard here first.

Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose played great music for the troops. Other than that I don’t think anyone believed their crap. Russian troops might love some broadcasting in Russian.

It should have read ‘broadcasting TO Ukraine’.
Even so, the Russkies are experts at jamming shortwave frequencies. They did so with extreme regularity back in the 70’s and 80’s to VOA, Radio Free Europe, BBC, and many of the other ‘free’ shortwave stations. And of course, Radio Moscow would beam their programs back the other way...but you couldn’t believe a damned thing they said.

3 March: BBC: Journalist wins ‘kleptocrat’ book High Court libel case
By Dominic Casciani
A libel claim brought by a post-Soviet mining giant against a journalist’s book about dirty money and corruption has been dismissed by a High Court.
Tom Burgis faced potentially huge damages over his book, Kleptopia.
But judge Mr Justice Nicklin stopped the case after finding the claim against the author to be wholly flawed.
In the book, Mr Burgis - a Financial Times journalist - charts how he says dirty money is linked to corruption and is now “flooding the global economy, emboldening dictators [and] poisoning democracies”.
Among its stories, the book features Kazakhstan-based Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC), a mining company with interests around the world...
He however still faces a second libel action over an article published in the Financial Times relating to his investigation.
A spokesman for HarperCollins described the case as “lawfare” - legal action that poses such massive financial risks to a defendant it has the effect of silencing them or making them withdraw.
“HarperCollins is committed to publishing high quality investigative non-fiction and to defending our authors in the face of legal attacks from those who would seek to use the UK courts to silence them.
“It is grossly unfair that yet again HarperCollins and our author have had to risk substantial legal costs and personal liability defending public interest journalism.”...

BBC is the pits.
Any of our Corporate Media talking about truth is just hilarious irony.
Truth hurts Putin and his followers.
By broadcasting in *Ukraine*?
Well of course! To Vlad and his minions Ukraine is a disobedient part of The Motherland!
Anyone still have a shortwave radio receiver in their home?
Did’nt think so
The BBC is the mouthpiece of the British government.
Since successive British governments for the best part of a century have been relentlessly attacked on the BBC, that’s a fairly hilarious statement. The government has no control over the BBC’s programming and ouput.
Actually, I have three of them . . . And in Eastern Europe they are far more common.
You'd be surprised how popular they've become again. As a Ham myself, I'm pretty frequently asked what the best brand of short wave radio is to buy, often by my co-workers.
Just the other day, I was asked to share my experience listening to the war on our corporate intranet. After recording a brief two minute thirty second intro video, I followed up by sharing recordings on many of the frequencies that are known to carry broadcasts and actual transmissions in Russian and Ukranian. Given a few of my staff are Ukranian, they were all very interested.
That interest at the bank I work for (a large, multi-national bank that has frozen assets of Russians) grows daily.
Do you have any idea how many of us here on FR are Hams?
Didn't think so.
“Anyone still have a shortwave radio receiver in their home?”
We do. It’s a nice little Grundig.

VOA is a mouthpiece of the American government, currently under totalitarian control of the corrupt Resident Biden.
