MUKACHEVO, Ukraine — Russia was moving Thursday to extend its control over Ukraine’s southern coast, with ground forces seizing or encircling cities, as the governor in the port of Kherson reported that Russian forces had captured a key government building.
In Mariupol, farther east, the mayor said that a Russian siege and hours of shelling that battered rail links and bridges had cut off water, power and food supplies.
And in Odessa, a major port city on the Black Sea, the mayor said in videos that it was preparing for its defense amid unverified reports that a large fleet of Russian warships was heading toward the waters off the city’s coast.

It appears that Russia tried the “civilized” way to get Ukraine to say Uncle. But that didn’t work so now they are unleashing the shock and awe. This probably won’t last long.

There is no other way this will end. Communists don’t care about losses. Ukraine has made it plenty bloody for Russia and whatever was the trigger for this, they put up a good fight.

Name any time that NATO has invaded ANY European nation. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
China has pushed Russia in the background to invade Ukraine, and now backed off their support. This makes Russia the bad guy on the world stage, and will make China the savior when they take over Eastern Russia this summer.
By painting Russia as the aggressors (as they are), there will be no sanctions when they move north. In fact, we will probably help or cheer them on. Taiwan will be left alone - it was a nice squirrel for all of the fear mongers.

The problem for Russia is they can’t. They could force Ukraine to surrender by leveling Kharkiv and killing the million people that live there, except:
1) Mass civilian casualties will trigger NATO involvement. We now know that the quality of Russian forces means that would be a one-sided slaughter
2) The Russian people, millions of whom have friends and family in Ukraine, would revolt and overthrow the current kleptocracy.
Russia is in no hurry, they will grind it out for weeks, months, years till they get everything they want.
A land bridge to the southern ports, complete annexation of the eastern third of Ukraine, choke off the big cities in west, then pull back and declare victory.
Give it 6 months.

If, as conventional wisdom tells us every day, the Russian Army is so inept, the U.S. should be able to bow out of NATO and let the home boys in Europe handle it from here.

PLA troops learned mountain fighting on the LAC with India. It will be useful in the Urals. A skeleton crew will remain on the LAC and the PLAN will be left in the South China Sea to protect against the west when this begins. Watch for the PLAAF and mechanized units to begin moving to Harbin soon.
