The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department announced that all masking metrics have been met and therefore indoor masking will no longer be required beginning March 2. The Public Health Department and the California Department of Public Health strongly recommends that the public continue to wear masks in all indoor public spaces.
The California Department of Public Health continues to require masking in higher-risk settings such as public transit, healthcare facilities, shelters, jails, and long-term care facilities. “We are very encouraged by the progress we have made. We have much less COVID spreading in our community as compared to two weeks ago or even a week ago,” said Dr. Sara Cody, Health Officer and Director of Public Health for the County of Santa Clara. “While indoor masking in public spaces will no longer be required, it still makes sense to do. Wearing a mask is part of working together to protect others, especially the most vulnerable among us.”
While Santa Clara County has met the required masking metrics (80% of the population vaccinated, COVID-19 hospitalizations in the jurisdiction are low and stable, seven consecutive days with the seven-day rolling average of new cases at 550 or below) to transition to a strong recommendation for indoor masking, the county remains in the “medium” level of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new COVID-19 community level framework.
Wearing a mask indoors has played an integral role in reducing COVID-19 risks for individuals, lowering the community spread of COVID-19, keeping our healthcare and hospital system manageable, and ensuring our schools remain open.
Along with providing additional protection for the most vulnerable individuals and groups, indoor masking, along with vaccines and other layered protections, provides the best defense against long COVID.

You can tell that our county health director Sara Cody has grudgingly "transitioned" to only a strong recommendation to wear masks from mandatory masking.
It's going to be interesting to observe how soon people take their masks off here in SCC. I'll bet 25% continue to wear them for another year.
The press release keeps saying "masks were very effective" but they never provide any data.
We split time between Santa Clara County, CA and Kootenai County, ID. Kootenai County is far north and doesn't get much sunlight in winter, it has a much lower vax rate than Santa Clara County, and it has never had mandated masking. The results as shown in the comparison of per capita case rates are telling: The first peak in December 2020 saw about twice the per-capita number of cases in Idaho than in SCC. Same with the Fall 2021 wave. But, interestingly, in this Biden winter of 'severe illness and death,' Kootenai County (with very lax measures) has had about half the cases of SCC (with extremely stringent measures.
So what good were all the stringent measures in SCC?

It’s time for Dr. Cody to get back to what she’s doing best. Spraying toxic chemicals on the people of Santa Clara County.
I’m in Santa Clara County and this is cracking me up. We were the ONLY area where the mask mandate was still standing.
The entire response to this 99.6% survivability disease has been a crock.
Yep, TRILLIONS of dollars wasted, untold lives ruined, careers damaged, suicides, medical treatments for serious diseases delayed (and people died), setting up the Big Steal in Nov 2020, the crooked medical establishment stifling real science and crushing any doctor who suggested alternative treatments, the medical establishment refusing to allow any alternatives to the vaccine, the government not researching the repurposing of existing safe and effective drugs, tyrannical governments all over the world flexing their muscles, plus showing the world what an unserious country we are emboldening Putin, et al.
The past two years are the most insane any of us will ever live through.
Well, it’s a step in the right direction.
Go to Hell and Burn, Sara Cody!
