WASHINGTON (AP) — People in the U.S. from Sudan and South Sudan can stay with temporary legal status to escape the conflict and natural disasters in their homelands, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday. It faces pressure to grant the same to Ukrainians.
There are 12 countries whose nationals receive temporary protected status, a program that former President Donald Trump sought to curtail amid criticism of frequent extensions that have enabled people to live in the U.S. for years in a kind of legal limbo.
The announcement affects a relatively small number of people. DHS said there are about 97 beneficiaries under the TPS designation for South Sudan and the extension will enable about 235 more to obtain the status.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says there are about 700 people from Sudan with TPS and 2,390 who are newly eligible under the new designation.
Anyone from either country who arrived in the U.S. after Tuesday would not be eligible for the temporary status, which requires a background security check and does not make anyone automatically in line to receive permanent legal status.

My wife does taxes and she had a man and a woman from Afghanistan yesterday wanting the third stimulus. They haven’t been in the country long enough to get the stimulus. They were probably refugees.
The couple are not employed and all of their expenses are being covered by the government. The man was looking for employment but hasn’t found any yet.
When my wife pointed out that the American people are very generous, the woman rolled her eyes.
General perceptions:
1. their expenses are being covered by the American taxpayers.
2. they don’t (or at least the woman) appreciate the generosity being provided by the American people.
3. they wanted their cut of the stimulus money even though they haven’t been in the country long enough.
I cry for my country and try my best to fight back.
They are turning this country into one I can no longer support.
Gotta help Ilhan stay in power and bring more communists to Minnesota.
But freedom loving Ukrainians? Nahhh… white peoples have too much privilege.
The Black Sudanese will have priority over White Americans for government services. Because....you know, that slavery thing.
More wonderful news from our communist masters...
Fortunately for them, virtually nobody gives a rat’s ass about these things...
Most of the serfs just want to continue to enjoy the sweet life, shift the weight of their chains slightly, and obey...
Not completely, but I get your point.
On one side, every entity clamors for it.
On the other side, a significant enough number do the same.
In the end, we have government without representation.
I don’t care what they do in the rest of the world, honestly.
I care what they do here, and that is certainly a goal.
