When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his first invasion of Ukraine in 2014, in which Crimea was annexed, his popularity ratings soared in Russia.

It hasn’t taken long for ordinary Russians to feel the pain of sanctions and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The ruble has again plummeted against the dollar, prompting Russia’s central bank to raise interest rates to 20% on Monday, from 9.5%. The move prompted desperate Russians to queue at banks and ATMs in a bid to withdraw their money in haste.

”For a comparison, nearly 2,500 American troops were killed in Afghanistan over 20 years of war.”
Russian troops are taking a beating. 2000 dead in 5 days. With a Ukrainian insurgency taking shape, Russia is going to lose thousands every month.
Little Pukin could get indicted for war crimes.
“The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, will hold public hearings in the case concerning Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation) on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 March 2022,”, the court said in a statement.
Well, since he’s been either prime minister or president since the Soviet Union fell, and fixes all elections (or poisons his opponents) I don’t think he really cares about his popularity.
He can COMPEL popularity.
“Several dozen Japanese men have answered a Ukrainian call for foreign volunteers to fight Russia’s invasion, including 50 former members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and two veterans of the French Foreign Legion, the Mainichi Shimbun daily said.”
“More than 1,000 foreign volunteers have agreed to fight on Ukraine’s side - Ukraine FM”
“Russia’s actions in Ukraine qualify as war crimes - UK PM Johnson”
Watch when the Ukes start using the tactics used against our troops in Iraq. The daily drumbeat of dead Russians won’t play well back home.
Ukraine has already taken the case for war crimes to the International Criminal Court. The Russian military brass should think about that, because they may end up on trial too.
The UN won’t be able to enforce their actions, but a few partisans in Russia will. The possibility of Putin facing a Ceausescu-like ending is likely far higher now.
As they should.
Patience. Action first then we can circle back and review the damning evidence against Biden and Nato.
Wishful thinking thus far. Putin is very popular in Russia and most Russians approve of the invasion. I have my doubts about how well Putin can achieve a military solution. Sanctions may in time dent his popularity in Russia. IMO he should have stopped at sending peacekeepers to those two eastern provinces filled with Russians.
But to say this has hurt his popularity in Russia so far is just wishful thinking.

Lots of images of destroyed Russian military hardware. Interesting comment by a western analyst, he was shocked that the Russian wheeled vehicles don't have run flat tires and have to be abandoned whenever the tires are shot up.
Its easy to take out supply vehicles by hitting the tires.
Odd. I just saw a Russian poll with him at 73% approval.
And whatever anyone claims about “casualties,” no one knows on either side.
Lawyer Robert Barnes (@BarnesLaw) on his podcast the other night said he had defended and debated both GHW Bush and W on “war crimes” and said none of them, including Putin, could ever be convicted. He said he didn’t agree with the policies, but that the criminality would not hold up.
Larry I like you, so I don’t want to argue with you.
We just have to disagree over Russia/Ukraine.
Russia has invaded a European nation. I want every Russian on Ukrainian soil to die.
Take care my friend.
“The daily drumbeat of dead Russians won’t play well back home.”
It doesn’t play well anywhere. After the Indian army Gurkhas stacked dead ChiComm army conscripts like cordwood at Ladakh in the summer of 2020, Chinese mothers were furious at the ChiComm leadership. Losing an only son is devastating to a traditional Chinese family. Yet, the ChiComms still rule China.
