It is remarkable how experts who claim audience by special knowledge or expertise play the morality card face down or face up as convenient.

Indeed. This is the kind of crap we get from Democrats all the time. Peter Beinart is yet another of the craven morons who infest the Democrat party.
The logic - the Russians have been hurt bad, ergo we must appease them. WW2 cost Russia ~10% of its population. That was a graze for the Russians compared to the annihilation of 1/2 the population of the German states during the Thirty Years War. But no one talks about how we need to let Germany become bigger so no one will impose this level of devastation on the Germans ever again. Half of the Jewish population was killed during WWII. How many countries are calling for a bigger Israel?
The Russians are just like the Chinese. They have an overweening and unquenchable sense of entitlement to other people’s lands. And there’s no limit to their ambitions.

The other key point is that WWII was caused by Russia’s alliance with Germany. Russia’s casualties were largely the result of its own schemes, which inflicted large scale death on the rest of the continent as well. But it’s Russia the instigator that needs extra room. You gotta love the chutzpah.
