Kremlin propaganda machine struggles to conceal Putin’s Ukraine war

As Vladimir Putin launched his military assault on Ukraine, the country’s media censor issued a series of stark warnings. Any outlet that cited sources other than the Kremlin or its armed forces could be banned, even for using the words “attack, invasion, or declaration of war” to describe it.

“We stress that it is Russian official information sources who have accurate and up-to-date information,” the censor Roskomnadzor said.

“It’s like a movie. The super commandos are conducting a special military operation and everything is super,” said Tikhon Dzyadko, editor of TV Rain, one of 10 media outlets to be threatened with a ban. “This is all done to make sure that society doesn’t know there’s a real, bloody war going on, so they’re trying to hide information from them as much as possible.”

Russia’s struggle to keep control of the war’s story, however, may not necessarily have consequences for Putin’s approval ratings. State television is the primary source of news for four out of five Russians, while the country has begun limiting access to Facebook and Twitter since the invasion began.

From all the demonstrations going on doesn’t look like it’s working.

One of the things that makes me most believe the stories that this invasion was poorly planned and worse executed is how much Russia is failing on the propaganda front.

Russia is winning battles. For instance, today Ukraine admitted the Russians have taken Berdyansk.

Yet we see nothing of it online, while every minor skirmish the Ukrainians win has instant videos and photos of triumphant Ukrainians standing atop destroyed Russian tanks.

Russian propaganda machine? Pikers compared to the propaganda machines in the west. The US misinformation effort is so effective most of the smartest people I know of, FReepers, will tell you Russia is a paper tiger with inferior weapons and all Ukrainians are Audie Murphys, mopping the floor with Russian armored brigades. Insanity!

The only thing worse than their state media propaganda is our state media propaganda.

I frankly just hope casualties are minimal. I don’t care which side wins. Hopefully it will be the kick in the ass Europe needs to build more nuclear power plants and not have to rely on foreign sources of natural gas.

There is a old joke about the news in the Russia, going back to the 1930s when Pravda and Izvestia were the only major newspapers. "There is in pravda in Izvestia, and no izvestia in Pravda" or "There is no truth in news, and no news in truth." As I recall, Ronald Reagan liked that joke.

The fact that Putin is even trying to use U.S.S.R. style information control, tells the Russian people what they need to know. Putin lost the information war before he started.

Also the fact that the Russians did not dispel rumors they were trying to win in three days and running out of gas hurt them. Unless those are not rumors and Putin's generals actually are making a mess of their logistics and operations. Just like like Gen. Keane and Petraeus say they are.

Putin lost the information war before he started.

He lost it internationally

Unfortunately I can't say that he has lost it domestically

Within Russia there is a huge media and social media effort by the Putin regime going on right now to shape public opinion

One of the most ominous things I've seen is that the propaganda agents are trying to justify in advance the use of heavier weapons, on the grounds that it is necessary to win the war whatever the cost. (Interesting - unstated premise is that the type of weapons used so far are not enough to win)

They are saying no matter how you feel about Putin, put those feelings aside, we can't afford to lose the war

They are preparing the ground for announcing losses of Russian soldiers

And of course the usual hate directed at Americans

As to your point here, the spin pro-Putin agents are giving in Russian social media is that Russian commanders prohibited Russian soldiers from taking photos and videos of what is going in Ukraine in order not to arouse anger among the Ukrainian population from the losses Ukrainian troops are taking in battle

One of the things that makes me most believe the stories that this invasion was poorly planned and worse executed is how much Russia is failing on the propaganda front.

What propaganda front? Do you mean US corporate mainstream, internet and social media? Why would they compete for that? Is it even possible, and does it matter at all? You ask why there is nothing to contradict the "poorly planned and worse executed" narrative? To ask the question is to answer it.

You keep saying you see these things on “Russian social media” but never give any links.

I give links to social media posts when I cite them, whether they are in Russian or Ukrainian or English or Polish (and I can’t read Polish at all, but there is that handy thing called “Google translate”).

Could you please give links?
