The Ukraine invasion is the first social media war

And Volodymyr Zelensky is its star....

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is not only the largest European land conflict since the 1940s — it’s also the first for the TikTok and YouTube generation.

As videos pour in across Twitter and Instagram and other social media platforms are leveraged for credit or propaganda, it’s become evident that we are in a brand new era, much like the one that arrived with twenty-four-hour cable news coverage of the US invasion of Iraq in 1990. Back then it was grainy night vision images of patriot missile launches and target explosions that dazzled homes all over the United States. Now anxious audiences simply launch their favorite social media app on their smart phone to see the latest hi-definition shelling of buildings in Kyiv from Russian forces, or viral news clips of Ukrainians threatening to “fuck some Russians up”.

CNN’s Brian Stelter attempted to take credit on behalf of all network news media for the coverage, saying on Twitter: “The past twenty-four hours are a reminder that consumers in an era of YouTube and TikTok still gravitate to trusted, established news outlets during emergencies. They ‘know where to go,’ so to speak. And television coverage is essential.”

Stelter has it completely backwards. While CNN has employed a roster of veteran foreign journalists, like the impeccable and reliable Clarissa Ward, to dominate their coverage on the ground in Ukraine, much of CNN’s main roster of partisan performers have been sidelined. That’s not a testament to the current state of CNN or cable news.

The push for vaccinations was a war IMHO and social media was definitely used.

I learned today that Volodymyr Zelensky was quite literally a star. He was an actor who played the president on a tv show.

This has the same feel as when the Indiana GOP was attacked for the RFRA law - complete with “economic sanctions”, virtue signaling galore and corporations AND banks declaring they would refuse to do business.

Pence, of course, wilted and Marc Benioff (the head of Salesforce) said this was the beginning of the future of corporatism over governments.

Same strategies in play here - on a bigger scale to be sure - but there’s no doubt this is an expansion of this.

Another curious piece of the puzzle - if Biden et al are super serious about the Ukraine and defending it from invasion then letting it into NATO is the crucial step.

But they won’t.

They make massive economic sanctions against the USSR but they won’t close the Ukraine airspace because that’s a bridge too far?

This whole thing is kabuki theater...

Closing Ukraine’s air space would involve Americans directly confronting and almost certainly killing Russian personnel. Obviously that could quickly lead to the ultimate failure.

They’ve already started the ultimate failure.

There’s no stopping it now.

And we all know how propaganda free a social media war is.......

Corporate fascist media has been blatantly lying to and gaslighting Americans since the 50s. We would be imbecilic to think they would not lie to and abuse Americans during a war for someone else’s benefit.

I'm not that pessimistic yet... this snake can sliver off many directions.

From what I am finding the Ukraine’s are far ahead on social media. You can’t watch a video on YouTube about how to fine tune a Glock but the Molotov cocktail videos come thru just fine. And the local bloggers are very proactive and know how to garner sympathy and rally the troops via social media.

GO Ukraine!
