On Feb. 24, Russia invaded Ukraine. In the early morning hours, before dawn, Russian artillery began bombarding Kyiv, Odessa and Kharkiv.
A few weeks earlier, as Vladimir Putin was ostentatiously amassing troops on the border, I had sent an email to two journalist friends in Kyiv.
“Ia s vami,” I wrote in Russian. I’m with you.
“We’re always mobilized,” one wrote back, “and ready to work, whatever comes.”

During World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution and the civil war that followed, Kyiv was occupied by five different armies. In the 1930s, Stalin engineered a famine that killed more than three and a half million Ukrainians. Then came the Great Terror, World War II, Nazi occupation, the Holocaust, ethnic cleansing, mass deportation to the Gulag, nuclear catastrophe. When the U.S.S.R. dissolved in 1991, Russia became its successor state; Ukraine and 13 other constituent Soviet Republics became newly independent states. In Ukraine, years of corruption, gangsterism and oligarchy followed. Under Mr. Yanukovych, Ukraine was bound to the Kremlin, and the country’s resources flowed largely to the president and his inner circle of oligarchs. A younger generation, born after the fall of the Soviet Union, looked to the prospect of EU membership for the horizon of their future.
....snip....
Then, in November 2013, under pressure from Mr. Putin, Mr. Yanukovych abruptly declined to sign a long-anticipated association agreement with the EU.
Thousands went out to the Maidan once again. They were largely students, young people who felt as if their future had been torn from their hands. They weren’t interested in ethnic differences or language politics. They were interested in Europe’s being open to them. Their slogan was “Ukraine is Europe.”

Yes, the great failure of Putin was that in 2014 the majority of Ukrainians were pro-Russian. But after 8 years of war and abuse everyone in Ukraine now hates the Russians.
It doesn’t matter what language they speak or what religion they follow, they are willing to pick up arms and fight for their country.

CUZ they don’t listen to CNN???
There are actually a couple of morons on this forum who are suggesting that Putin will starve Kiev into submission. They think the rest of the world will stand by with their peckers in their hands while a 21st Century Holdomor occurs.
If Putin does that Russia will instantly become a pariah state and the Russian people would drag him into the streets and hang him by his heels from a lamp post.

I have a new saying when faced with a difficult problem “This is harder than invading Ukraine!”
Not sure what the reason is but the optics are awful.
Immunocompromised from spinal cancer treatments.
How can I smile when I cant understand?
Putin is looking more and more like Ceaușescu as the hours pass. An isolated and demented dictator detached from reality. The world has changed. Putin doesn’t get it.
Dumb question ... why do they even release a photo like that?
Putin is terrified of getting the Chicom flu, apparently. What a warrior. Just imagine what he’ll do when his people come to give him the Mussolini treatment.
This pic just shows you how out of touch Putin and his inner circle are. They are living on another planet.
That’s the only way pukin is gonna leave.
Somebody let the cat out of the bag. Ukraine fighting for NWO.
My thoughts exactly. Maybe there’s a valid medical reason for the separation but then why release the photos? Symbolically, it portrays Putin as isolated from his command staff - not a good look at all.
During WWII, the Germans besieged Leningrad for about 1000 days and one-third of its three million people died of starvation. Kyiv has about the same population as Leningrad had in 1941. Putin probably expects the city to surrender long before one million die of starvation. Why should he be worried about international opinion? He has nukes.
True that. He deserves such an ending as Ceausescu.
WHY???
there is no fall back position, there’s no rally point, there is no LZ... they’re on our own.
