War Propaganda About Ukraine Becoming More Militaristic, Authoritarian, and Reckless
greenwald.substack ^ | 2/27/22 | Glenn Greenwald

Disinformation and utter hoaxes are now being aggressively spread as well. Both Rep. Kinzinger and Rep. Swalwell ratified and spread the story of the so-called "Ghost of Kyiv,” a Ukrainian fighter pilot said to have single-handedly shot down six Russian planes. Tales and memes commemorating his heroism viralized on social media, ultimately ratified by these members of Congress and other prominent voices. The problem? It is a complete hoax and scam, concocted through a combination of deep fake videos based on images from a popular video game. Yet to date, few who have spread this fraud have retracted it, while censorship-happy Big Tech corporations have permitted most of these fraudulent posts to remain without a disinformation label on it..

-snip-

But we are way past the point where anyone cares about what is or is not factually true, including corporate outlets. Any war propaganda — videos, photos, unverified social media posts — that is designed to tug on Western heartstrings for Ukrainians or appear to cast them as brave and noble resistance fighters, or Russians as barbaric but failing mass murderers, gets mindlessly spread all over without the slightest concern for whether it is true. To be on social media or to read coverage from Western news outlets is to place yourself into a relentless vortex of single-minded, dissent-free war propaganda. Indeed, some of the above-referenced stories may turn out to be true, but spreading them before there is any evidence of them is beyond reckless, especially for media outlets whose role is supposed to be the opposite of propagandists.

Yeah, given what Soros, Liz Cheney, Kinzinger, and Romney have all said.

Since it will soon disappear from Toutube, I watched the RT livestream today to try to get their side of the story about the “Ukranian Special Operation”.

It was a long, winding, butthurt tale of George Bush 1 and breakaway states, and blah, blah, blah.

Putin may have a good case, but it was boring and convaluted and really hard to follow. I’m sure it all make sense in his mind.

Showing videos of women & children hiding in basements, fearing for their life, and stories of Heroric ukranians is 1000X more powerful than a legal arguement about 8 or 30 year old treaties that “justify” an invasion.

Putin is screwed.

One of the most maddening but amusing parts of this massive propaganda effort is that the left is now portraying civilians with military-style weapons as a wonderful thing. We are shown photos of brave Ukrainian grannies, beauty queens, and gays marching off against the Russians with some of the same weapons that the left wants to take away from Americans, or never allow us to have in the first place. Finally, the left is delighted to see heavily armed white nationalists!

It matters very little whether a story of a particular pilot’s exploits is true.

I’m pretty sure Ukraine has been invaded by Russia, and has been fighting back.

Well, it is sad what is happening to Ukraine. It’s unfair but I’m not convinced it means we have to go in.

“ But I also quickly realized that millions of Americans — either due to age or previous political indifference — began paying attention to politics for the first time in 2016 due to fear of Trump, and thus knew little to nothing about anything that preceded it. Such people had no defenses against the propaganda narrative and deceitful tactics because, for them, it was all new. They had never experienced it before and thus had no concept of who they were applauding and how such official government/media disinformation campaigns are constructed. Each generation is thus easily programmed and exploited by the same propaganda systems, no matter how discredited they were previously

Although such episodes are common, one has to travel back to the period of 2001-03, following the 9/11 attack on U.S. soil, and through the invasion of Iraq, in order to find an event that competes with the current moment in terms of emotional intensity and lockstep messaging throughout the West. Comparing that historical episode to now is striking, because the narrative themes deployed then are identical to those now; the very same people who led the construction of that narrative and accompanying rhetorical tactics are the ones playing a similar role now; and the reaction that these themes trigger are virtually indistinguishable.

Many who lived through the enduring trauma and mass rage of 9/11 as an adult need no reminder of what it was like and what it consisted of. But millions of Americans now focused on Ukraine did not live through that. And for many who did, they have, with the passage of two decades, revised or now misremember many of the important details of what took place. It is thus worthwhile to recall the broad strokes of what we were conditioned to believe to see how closely it tracks the consensus framework now”.

Who is leading us to where?

Very good point.

There’s also the “Zombie of Moscow” who was able to successfully withdraw cash from six ATMs before the banking system crashed

They will sing of his exploits forever more

"It is genuinely hard to overstate how overwhelming the unity and consensus in U.S. political and media circles is. It is as close to a unanimous and dissent-free discourse as anything in memory, certainly since the days following 9/11. Marco Rubio sounds exactly like Bernie Sanders, and Lindsay Graham has no even minimal divergence from Nancy Pelosi. Every word broadcast on CNN or printed in The New York Times about the conflict perfectly aligns with the CIA and Pentagon's messaging. And U.S. public opinion has consequently undergone a radical and rapid change; while recent polling had shown large majorities of Americans opposed to any major U.S. role in Ukraine, a new Gallup poll released on Friday found that “52% of Americans see the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as a critical threat to U.S. vital interests” with almost no partisan division (56% of Republicans and 61% of Democrats), while “85% of Americans now view [Russia] unfavorably while 15% have a positive opinion of it.”

The same has been visible on FR in the past 48 hours. Anyone who observes that maybe, just maybe we're not getting the staight story from the MSM and the pols or the flood of social media showing the Ukranian David beating Putin's Goliath is a Russian bot. Weird.

The Lefties have been screaming for years that Russia stole the 2016 election from Hillary, and illegally put Trump in office as an illegitimate president. As far as they’re concerned, anything bad the Russians do in real life, also confirms their ‘Trump/Russia collusion’ fairy tales. They absolutely love this invasion, which is why the propaganda is literally non-stop, 24/7...

Quite true. I’ve compared what’s being posted here vs other conservative sites (i.e. conservative treehouse, the donald, quod verum) and much of FR seems to be on the pro-war bandwagon compared to those other, newer (less known) sites. The same enemedia that lied about Trump and covid for the last 6+ years should now be taken at face value???

It’s as if the globalist shills are concentrating on the well known sites such as FR, facebook, twitter and you need to go to the newer/less popular ones to get a better feel of what conservatives/Republicans actually are thinking.

The media did the same thing in former Yugoslavia. And that was before social media. And remember Libya? It was ridiculous. The media parroting tweets by the barbaric proto-ISIS terrorists (calling them “activists”) with all sorts of wild propaganda as truth. When international teams went in afterward, they discovered nearly every claim was false, including “Gaddafi’s black mercenaries” who has been reported by the “activists” as terrorizing the poor people of Benghazi were actually some nobody security guards at some storage facility who has been rounded up, bound and executed, some hung from meathooks in the town square by those wonderful “democracy-loving activists.” And the silly Viagra rape hoax breathlessly carried by the media.

Earlier, BBC was passing off an old photo of damage to apartment buildings in Donetsk from Ukrainian shelling as damage in Kharkov from Russian shelling.

The West was nearly as unified over the US invasion of Iraq, with both France and Germany opposed.

This time it's the opposite: the Europeans are generally frightened and really pissed and the US is more nonchalant, probably because Blinken is still in "muh global institutions" la-la land, doesn't know what to do with a real war and US intel seems to have expected Ukrainian resistance to collapse.

So with the senile pantscrapper pretending to be President, the US is basically Alfred E. Neumann "what me worry."

Regarding who the good and bad guys are, it's never black and white and all the media wants, other than hating Putin and Trump, is black and white stories for their ignorant readers (and themselves).

However there is one simple fact about the invasion that can't be ignored. The only way Putin gets what he wants is to unleash many more cruise missiles along with imprecise air strikes. That will destroy a large amount of civilian stuff in Ukraine. There will be lots of civilian casualties. That will be bad and the question of good and bad will be settled.

It's coming folks....

Sedition Act of 1918 (1918)

The Sedition Act of 1918 curtailed the free speech rights of U.S. citizens during World War I. Its passage came to be viewed as an instance of government overstepping the bounds of First Amendment freedoms. President Woodrow Wilson (above), who urged passage of the Act, was concerned about the country’s diminishing morale and looking for a way to clamp down on widespread disapproval of the war and the military draft.

The Sedition Act of 1918 curtailed the free speech rights of U.S. citizens during time of war.

Passed on May 16, 1918, as an amendment to Title I of the Espionage Act of 1917, the act provided for further and expanded limitations on speech. Ultimately, its passage came to be viewed as an instance of government overstepping the bounds of First Amendment freedoms.

Sedition Act passed during World War I President Woodrow Wilson, in conjunction with congressional leaders and the influential newspapers of the era, urged passage of the Sedition Act in the midst of U.S. involvement in World War I. Wilson was concerned about the country’s diminishing morale and looking for a way to clamp down on growing and widespread disapproval of the war and the military draft that had been instituted to fight it.

Targets of Act were typically individuals who opposed the war effort The provisions of the act prohibited certain types of speech as it related to the war or the military. Under the act, it was illegal to incite disloyalty within the military; use in speech or written form any language that was disloyal to the government, the Constitution, the military, or the flag; advocate strikes on labor production; promote principles that were in violation of the act; or support countries at war with the United States.

The targets of prosecution under the Sedition Act were typically individuals who opposed the war effort, including pacifists, anarchists, and socialists. Violations of the Sedition Act could lead to as much as twenty years in prison and a fine of $10,000. More than two thousand cases were filed by the government under the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918, and of these more than one thousand ended in convictions.

Court upheld Sedition Act convictions against First Amendment challenges The Supreme Court upheld the convictions of many of the individuals prosecuted. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. established the “clear and present danger” test in Schenck v. United States (1919). In upholding Socialist Charles Schenck’s conviction, Justice Holmes wrote that “the most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic.” The Court also unanimously upheld convictions in Debs v. United States (1919) and Frohwerk v. United States (1919).

In Abrams v. United States (1919), the Court reviewed the conviction under the act of Jacob Abrams, who, along with four other Russian defendants, was prosecuted for printing and distributing leaflets calling for workers to strike in an effort to end military involvement in the Soviet Union. The Court in late 1919 upheld the conviction.

However, in this instance Holmes, along with Justice Louis D. Brandeis, dissented from the majority, arguing that the “clear and present danger” test was not met under the circumstances arising in the case. Specifically, Holmes felt that Abrams had not possessed the necessary intent to harm the U.S. war effort. In contrast to his majority opinion in Schenck, Holmes’s dissenting opinion in Abrams urged that political speech be protected under the First Amendment.

The Sedition Act of 1918 was repealed in 1920, although many parts of the original Espionage Act remained in force.
