They looked up to the Russian strongman as a defender of closed borders, Christian conservatism and bare-chested machismo in an era of liberal identity politics and Western globalization. Fawning over him was a core part of the populist playbook.

Why, if Trump was in office, the SF Defecator would be hailing Putin as an enlightened progressive champion of Democracy.
On the other hand, if Trump was in office, Putin would be trying to find the head below his belt.

The MSM was in on it too. They would run a LGBTQI-whatever information operation just before Putin would propose some ‘protection of the family’ BS law, decree or whatever. All meant to bring conservatives to Putin so when US Leftist fail to impose full economic sanctions, seize Russian elites’ assets etc. the conservatives would not call them out on it.
The US and China are currently Putin’s lifeline while he threatens Europe with annihilation.
Putin’s deception of Western conservatives won’t last much longer.
The Lib definition of “Putin supporter” is someone who doesn’t want to send our troops to die defending the country that bankrolled the Biden crime family.
The only people I’ve seen supporting Putin are the hardcore lefties (AOC, Elizabeth Warren supporters).. (I’m not counting obvious Russian propagandists - who we have here).
They are very circumspect.
