'Glory to Ukraine': hundreds of thousands march against Russian invasion

Dressed in the blue and yellow colours of the Ukraine flag and bearing posters crying "No World War 3", hundreds of thousands of people descended on the streets Sunday in solidarity with Ukraine as it battles the invading Russian army.

From Berlin to Baghdad to Quito, demonstrators chanted "shame" against Russian President Vladimir Putin, while others waved banners with slogans like "Putin murderer" or "stop the monster".

In the German capital, police estimated turnout at at least 100,000, while Prague drew 70,000 and Amsterdam 15,000.

Organisers of the Berlin protest put the numbers at five times the police estimate, with demonstrators massing at the Brandenburg Gate, a stone's throw away from the imposing Russian embassy on major boulevard Unter den Linden.

Although the embassy -- in which Russian diplomats not only work but live -- was cordoned off by police, some protesters gathered in front shouting "glory to Ukraine" and singing Ukrainian songs.

"It is important to me for Germany to show that it is standing for democracy in Europe," said Hans Georg Kieler, 49, who had turned out at the demonstration.

He voiced approval for Germany's decision to begin delivering armaments to Ukraine, but said he thought "we could have helped Ukraine more".

Ukrainian Valeria Moiseeva was also at the march.

"I am personally disappointed by Russia, I hate Russia, I hate all Russians," the pregnant 35-year-old said, adding that her mother was now sitting in a cellar in Kyiv in fear of bombs.

'Madman'

In Prague, tens of thousands gathered at the central Wencleslas Square, including Roman Novotny, who had to travel around 300 kilometres (186 miles) to get to the protest from Uherske Hradiste in the southeast of the country.

"We all have to do our best," he told AFP, carrying a banner slamming Putin.

[I’ve seen it said that Russia is taking a slower approach in an attempt to reduce civilian infrastructure losses. Different from the US approach. The US likes to destroy everything ASAP, followed by spending taxpayer dollars to rebuild it all.]

That is the opposite of reality. In Kharkov, he is demolishing entire city blocks at a time with Grads, the Russian MLRS. He is burning Kharkov to the ground the way he did Grozny in Chechnya. Whereas the US has always used PGM’s for pin-point strikes in Afghanistan or Iraq when operating in urban areas.

I understand why he’s doing these fairly traditional ways of eliminating enemy resistance - to reduce friendly casualties and equipment losses. But to pretend Putin is this great humanitarian? That’s a hard sell.

Is the source of that info somebody posting on Facebook? Or can you provide proof of those claims?

You may be right, but I've seen a lot of cases in the past day or so of photographic evidence of this, that, or the other using images which were already on the internet years ago, and somebody just making claims about what is happening may be no more reliable than Baghdad Bob.

This is on a forum featuring NATO officers, serving and retired. I’ll leave it at that.

So, pretty much just propaganda presented to sway public opinion then.

Nope. Just shooting the breeze about developments in Ukraine. Pretty sure Ukrainians will lose because of this amoral but tried-and-true strategy. So am I. But if they are prepared to risk it all, the least we can do is provide material assistance.

"The most amazing thing to me is the number of people here and also my neighbors who have bought 100% into all this nonsense. The Covid hysterics have been worse but not by that much. We have so many who believe that villainizing Putin and Russians in general is the patriotic thing to do.

Most of them could not differentiate between a Russian and a Ukrainian if their life depended on it. Was that good looking newish car you bought that turned out to have 3 cans of Bondo holding it together and did not have airbags installed from a Russian or a Ukrainian? They don't know."

The first casualty of war is truth and we are not getting the truth for most of the corporate media.

Eh. I've seen Baby Milk Factory signs before. Both sides are fighting with lethal weapons, and fighting equally aggressively with smoke and mirrors. There's a different thread a few up from this one with reporting from somebody "in country". I believe his view is also that the Russians are in fact trying to minimize damage. He most likely has an agenda too though, so who knows?

Seek increased energy independence from Russia by expanding coal and gas reserves and building two LNG terminals.)

Has the Moscow Madman’s nuclear rhetoric slapped some sense into their silly heads about “climate change” and being ok with energy dependence on Russia? That’s pretty amazing!

They are destroying plenty. I have photos of apartments reduced to rubble from friends in Kiev. He’s definitely destroying civilian property and lives.

Up until now, the US was pushing the reluctant EU. Now the EU and Germany are out in front. The sanctions WILL hurt Russia, a lot, especially the rich. The weapons that the EU is paying for and sending will hurt Russia. Putin is like Japan at Pearl Harbor – he has awakened the sleeping eagle (albeit the German one) and it wasn’t a good idea to do so. When the German chancellor, who has acted like Putin’s personal valet throughout suddenly does a U-turn - that’s when you sit up and take notice.

I've seen photos published on the internet showing that. Not being in a position to do so myself, I have no way of which side actually shot the weapons that caused the damage. Most likely came from Russian aircraft, but friendly fire incidents do happen. So does incidental damage in a war, even if there is an overall goal of avoiding damage.

Don't believe everything you read or hear. It was only a couple of days ago that people were outraged by the Russian armored vehicle that deliberately ran over a civilian vehicle on the road. Other reports say it was actually a Ukraine armored vehicle. I have no way of knowing who's telling the truth.

Would your friends in Kiev tell you if the apartments were actually unintentionally damaged by their side? Would they even know?

LOL. Why are you trying to destroy MAGA? Do you really love Putin more than America? Brandon is going to benefit from Ukraine kicking Putin butt. We need to join this Ukraine parade or we will get run over by it in the midterms and Trupm in 2024. Guaranteed.
