Ukraine invasion: Russian conscripts reportedly forced to sign military contracts, losing contact with family

Parents of Russian conscripts who say they've lost communications with their loved ones are pleading with Kremlin officials for answers as to where family members have been sent amid concerns they have been forced to sign contracts to fight as part of President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, according to the report.

Olga Larkina, the director of Russia’s Committee of Soldiers’ Mothers, spoke to Russian investigative news outlet Meduza, describing how Russian conscripts – those fulfilling military enlistment requirements – had been pressured, or at times even forced to sign contracts to become soldiers for the Russian military.

"Mothers are telling us that their sons have been calling them and saying they’re being forced to sign contracts. We believe it’s wrong to force a conscript to become a contract soldier," Larkina said, according to the translated article. "The parents who have gotten in touch have told us their sons were just taken by military officers, stamped, and that’s it — now they’re contract soldiers."

Oh no! forcing military recruits to sign contacts! Anyone who gets recruited by the US Army does the same damn thing. What a ridiculous propaganda post.

Go to DU.

Maybe some can explain this….I just assumed if you were in the army you had to fight….

Unless it was a two step process….you went in but then signed a contract to be fighter??

My child said that even the captains’ phones were confiscated

So in addition to sleeping in tents in the middle of winter for weeks, eating field rations, maybe catching covid and getting sick, these 19-year olds are suffering from severe internet withdrawal.

Not even a joke, smartphone addiction is a real thing with young people.

Maybe this will add to a growing sentiment in Russia to try to stop this madness of Putin's.

Never heard this crap before in war coverage unless it is about your own military.

Something doesn’t smell right about this whole conflict.

There is so many silly inane things reported.

One-third of the Russian army is conscripts.

Young Russian males have to serve one year in the army.

I gather the idea is that this year is for training, if there are actual hostilities the professional volunteers who signed contracts (like in the enlistment process here) would go into combat.

I understand that under a Russian executive order, conscripts who have served four months (or is it three?) become legally eligible to sign contracts if they wish.

There have been reports in social media that 5,000 Russian contract soldiers in the Belgorod, Russia encampment near Kharkiv, Ukraine rioted after being ordered to go into the Kharkiv attack.

You really seem upset that things aren’t going so well for Putin. Its Saturday night. Have a drink. Or 5. Maybe you’ll feel better.

Correct. By law only volunteers can be sent outside of Russia. Conscripts are there only to defend the motherland.

What this article is saying is that conscripts are being pressured to sign the paperwork that would allow them to go to Ukraine.

The Russian army has conscripts (soldiers for only 12 months) and contract soldiers that sign contracts for longer periods of time. The key distinction is that conscripts cannot be sent outside the borders of Russia, but contract soldiers can. To get more bodies real fast they are pressuring their conscripts to sign contracts so they can be sent to the fighting. It may not be voluntary in some cases as the article implies.

Russia is going to bleed manpower on Ukraine because they had a terrible planning for it.

Something about Russian law precludes consripted troops from serving outside of the country unless they agree.

These were actual volunteers, or draftees who were shanghaied into becoming contractniki?

"You really seem upset that things aren't going so well for Putin"

Quit dodging the issue. If it isn't propaganda then tell me that Americans don't sign contracts when they join the military.

Having lived through the last two decades of leftist propaganda here in United States I have no stomach for it from anywhere - regardless of the source. The story is ludicrous.

I am tired of being lied to 24x7x365 and I don't think I am alone.

I’ll add that there is a lot of abuse in the Russian army of these young conscripts and it occasionally appears in the Russian media as an issue.

Since everyone has to serve, you get a mix of all kinds of kids coming in, psychos included.

There are frequently reports of conscripts being killed in instances of well, hazing is too weak a word. And kids committing suicide. And kids committing “suicide.”

A lot of Russian mothers are very wary of sending their sons to the army and complain bitterly about it.
