Very hard to understand how a violent invasion advances the essential interests of Russia.

If Putin had stopped the first day, after the non-violent occupation of pro-Russian border regions, this whole thing would be over. Various factions would grumble about various disagreements, but the international political tension and the risk of further violence would mostly disappear.

Instead, Putin is now attacking 30 million non-Russian Ukrainians who do not want to be part of Russia or governed by Putin.

Putin is going to need 250,000 soldiers and secret police just to keep the lid on Ukraine for decades into the future.

Historically, Putin's invasion of Ukraine is the most irrational political decision since Hitler invaded the Ukraine 80 years ago!
