World leaders have decided to cut off Russian financial institutions from using the SWIFT money transfer system as part of ongoing sanctions against Russian aggression in Ukraine.
The decision comes after a sweeping list of other sanctions against Russia, including the freezing of assets and the closure of airspace to Russian flights. It was delayed due to some world leaders considering the step to be too drastic at the time.
US President Joe Biden has stated that the sanctions imposed on Russia are among "the most severe in history." The Russian stock market and currency have taken severe losses since the start of the campaign, with the ruble dropping in value to less than that of the currency in some online video games and Russian investors losing nearly $40 billion within a short period after the invasion began.

Biden must have received a cojones implant this morning; GREAT NEWS FOR UKRAINE!!!
this will cause some inconvenience but little pain in Moscow
and they will just further develop their own financial system... something they can do easily with computers and a little time
finally, intermediaries will be only too happy to step in and assist with transactions for a small fee. Indeed, it could wind up just being a new graft... or rather, “business” opportunity for Hunter Biden?
so, we don’t expect “capitalist tricks” like this will cause any troops to suddenly turn around, go home, and go off on holiday.
This is what happens when the underdog’s got game. People stand up and pay attention. If it were a cakewalk for Russia, it wouldn’t matter if they were bayonetting babies as they advanced, there’d be crickets.
That’s why America has to start drilling again. Europe needs oil and gas. They’ll pay in bullion or bit-coin for it, and bugger-all the SWIFT system can do about that. If America is back in competition for the European petrol and gas markets, it won’t immediately turn the troops around, but it will certainly do something useful, especially if the Ukrainians can drag out the fight.
Buh-bye global reserve currency status for the USD. The first victim is the SWIFT system. The second victim is the American people who will be it with a sledgehammer of inflation.
Russians receive foreign income using SWIFT, now they will get cut off.
If Russia is cut off from Swift, how will Biden get his 10%?
You seem to believe that actions like this are designed to hurt Russia.
They aren’t. They’re designed to hurt Americans.
Bannon agrees.
It’s going to be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
Isn’t that also the method of payment for the gas and we and the Europeans buy from them? Do you think the Russians will now be ‘forced’ to change their plans?
Now we’re gonna really show them. Everybody have a full tank?
“Unless putin backs out or finishes the job quickly, this could be the end of American exceptionalism.”
Enh. American exceptionalism existed long before discovering how useful petroleum is.
One day, solar power will be supreme—when it’s piped in from outer space, where it’s available on a constant, overwhelming basis. Petroleum and all the evils that come with it (not “climate change,” but real evils*) will eventually go the way of whale oil.
* for example, the annihilation of the Osage, the oppression of the Ahwazi, the enslavement of Christians and animists in Darfur region of Sudan, etc.
Putin’s wreckless miscalculation us causing many oligarchs to take staggering losses. Well see how they like that.
“...this could be the end of American exceptionalism...”
It’s all by design. George Soros taught his Marxist students well.
Clinton/Obama/Biden are the greatest evil in the world today. At least Putin loves Russia and would never betray her. Can you say the same about those 3 traitors?
Funny watching the Russian Trolls here and their co-conspirator LiberalTarian Putin boot lickers, trying to spin lol.
The US/EU/Japan West have this gamed. Russia will be hurt to the maximum.
I filled up on Friday. I have noticed that the price of gas where I live hasn't budged a penny since this whole thing started.
yes that is correct......( but new computer connections will spring up ... there’s no cutting off the flow of money...its fungible to the max.... ask any USA realtor receiving all cash bids from communist Chinese buyers whose government not only interrupts the usual computer connections but actually makes the export of such funds criminal offenses... and yet the funds continue to arrive in USA by the Billions and Billions)
This decision about Russia and SWIFT is stupid.
Russia has energy to sell.
Other countries have money to buy that energy.
The mechanisms involved, physical and financial, should be left alone.
I don’t want Russians to be impoverished due to the stupidity of their leaders.
I don’t want Europeans to be without the energy they need due to the stupidity of their leaders.
This is a bad decision with a lot of ugly repercussions.
