It’s either in the Dombas area, or just outside it. Hard to tell from the online Google map I’m looking at. It’s on the coast of the Sea of Azov and maybe 50 or 60 miles southwest of Donetsk.

There are two oblasts in the Dombas region. Mariupol is on the southwest border of the Donetsk oblast.

I believe the "separatists" stopped just short of Mariupol in 2014.

Technically yes, but it is outside of where the DNR has controlled. The DNR/LNR only control 1/3rd of the land they claim, a very small section near the border. The full 3/3rd is a big chunk of Ukraine, and it includes this city which is also an important port.

They wanted the port really bad in 2014, but the Ukrainians pushed the Ukrainians back to their present “borders”.
