Was at the airport yesterday, and listened to a mother behind me berate her 7 or 8 year-old daughter - called her "a little jerk," said she "always acted stupid" said "I'm not putting up with your shit." It started when the child wanted her Gameboy or some gaming device. It ended with the kid in tears, of course.
Maybe mom doesn't get violent, IDK, but there are parents out there who simply torture their children in various ways.
My mum is a prime example of that.

I just spanked, as I wasn’t into the New Age crap of trying to reason with kids or given them ‘time outs’ - after all, I’m the parent, so I’m the boss - don’t accept that and life gets painful.
Obviously my kids turned out just fine.
