Student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy.
In 2001 I was concerned because my two sons and wives were hitting 30 and I only had one grandchild. So, I borrowed on my equity line and gave them each $10,000 so they could buy a house with multiple bedrooms. They were living in one bedroom apartments. They each bought a 3 bedroom fixer upper, and I now have 4 grandchildren.
One daughter-in-law had a big student loan. Conditions after 2008 were falling apart in the condo complex where they had bought their home. [Also in a lot of places in the US.] They did a short sale on their house and in the process managed to write off her student loan. Then they moved near her parents where my son has now built a good small construction business.
Sometimes it takes some creative thinking and/or family cooperation to get what we want in this economy.
