New Cases: As of February 16, 2022, the 7-day moving average of daily new cases (121,665) decreased 43.0% from a week ago.
New Hospitalizations: The current 7-day daily average for February 9–February 15, 2022, was 8,642. This is a 28.8% decrease from the prior weekly report.
Deaths: The current 7-day moving average of new deaths (2,021) has decreased 14.5% compared with the previous weekly report.
Variants: Omicron is estimated to be approximately 100% of new cases. The BA.2 sub-lineage has slowed its proportional growth, up 3.9% over the last week, compared to 3.6% the week before.
Test Positivity Rate: The 7-day average of percent positivity from NAATs Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests, like PCR) is now 8.4% (down 4.5% from the prior week).
Vaccination: 76.0% of the U.S. population has received at least one dose (64.5% fully vaccinated). 87.6% of adults that have received at least one dose (74.7% fully vaccinated).

Nationally, New Cases are down 85% from the peak in mid-January. New Hospitalizations are down by more than half, and deaths have now begun a steep decline. All indicators are improving rapidly, on the CDC’s weekly summary this Friday.

While it’s true enough that pure ceebug related hospital admissions are down, our local hospital reports daily that about half of the current admissions are triple shotters. They aren’t treating them for lung ailments as with covid but rather treating them for clots, brain fog, kidney damage, myocarditis, new cancers, and more things related to red blood cell problems.

Looks like we are done with the Omicron wave. Other nations are just getting started, Brazil, France and Russia. Omicron hit USA harder compared to Delta while in most of the world, the opposite is true. Still some time left so we’ll see how all of this shakes out.

I saw one estimate recently, that perhaps 73% of the US population has already been exposed to Omicron. Omicron was significantly more immune evasive (from both vaccination or infection) than was Delta, and also significantly more infectious. Omicron may have gotten us worse than Delta because Delta had only a relatively small proportion of the population without immunity to run through, but Omicron’s immune evasiveness opened a much wider pool for it.
Along with all of our prior infection, and all of our vaccination, I really expect that we are going to scrape very low on this downswing. If immunity is reasonably durable, I think its more much likely that we will see cases drop very low, rather than seeing another variant wave.
There just doesn’t seem to be much running room left for other variants.
The drug companies will likely be pushing another booster in the Fall, like an annual flu shot (no matter what), but we will just have to see how durable the immunity turns out to be in practice.
