EVs and mass transit aren’t competitive unless gas prices are very high.
This is Obama and his $7 gas, he just got delayed for a while.
On a pure dollars per mile traveled EV are already cheaper a lot cheaper. Here in Texas we can have retail power to the plug for under 10 cents a kWh. A model S Tesla will go 4 miles on a single kWh from the plug. That’s 2.5 cents per mile in “fuel” costs. A similar sized car that runs on petrol would be doing well to get 30 mpg combined mpg. A S80 Volvo is the same size with nearly identical seating capacity and cargo carrying weight. To equal 2.5 cents per mile in fuel costs at 30 mpg petrol would have to cost 75 cents per gallon. Electric motors are second law of thermodynamics machines they are triple the efficiency of first law combustion machines this is freshman level physics.
The numbers get even better with a Model 3 Tesla which retails for less than a S60 Volvo new. The S60 barely gets 32 mpg combined and the model 3 only uses 220 watt hours per mile. So for less money fmnew from the factory you can drive a Tesla that seats the same as a S60 Volvo a.comparable luxury car with one third the cost per mile in fuel costs. Repeat that again for the same money out of pocket with zero federal tax break since Tesla lost that years ago when they crossed 250,000 EVs you can drive a car that seats 5 with full luxury interior and all the tech gizmos that uses the.equivalent of 75 cents per gallom fuel.
Welcome to the 21 21st century. EVs are not for poor’s but nether is a luxury S60 or BMW 3 series which also is more expensive than a model 3 and nearly identical in size and capacity.
