Thomas Massie: Biden's Rhetoric on Guns is Far From 'Reasonable'
Newsweek ^ | THOMAS MASSIE AND JOHN R. LOTT, JR

Posted on 02/14/2022 5:57:27 AM PST by RandFan

Fact-checkers keep assuring Americans that President Biden doesn't want to ban guns, but simply wants "reasonable" gun regulations. Yet judging by the president's rhetoric, Biden either doesn't know much about guns (a concerning possibility given his constant push for more regulations) or is calling for a complete ban on the vast majority of guns sold in the U.S.

Just last Thursday, when Biden spoke in New York City about combatting gun crime—not the 92 percent of violent crime that has nothing to do with guns—he focused on handguns. A "Glock with 40 rounds—a magazine with 40 rounds. And it's really a weapon of war," he said. "But I don't see any rationale to why there should be such a weapon able to be purchased."

And at a CNN town hall last year, Biden remarked, "The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon—whether it's a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it's a rifle—is ridiculous. I'm continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things."

At a high-dollar private fundraiser in Seattle in 2019, Biden asked, "Why should we allow people to have military-style weapons including pistols with 9-mm bullets and can hold 10 or more rounds?"

These statements implicate a far wider range of guns than Biden lets on. Any semi-automatic gun, whether it's a handgun or rifle, "can hold" a magazine of virtually any capacity. In fact, the vast majority of handguns sold in this country are semi-auto handguns. In 2018, almost 3.9 million semi-automatic handguns were manufactured in the U.S., compared to less than 700,000 revolvers. So, about 85 percent of all handguns made were semi-automatics that "can hold" magazines........

Biden, as a columnist recently said, is a gun quack. Knows nothing about it, talks a lot, and what he says on the subject is dangerous.

Always remember, their goal has been the to make all firearms TOTALLY ILLEGAL. Here is what Nelson “Pete” Shields founder of Handgun Control Inc (now the Brady Center) said back in 1976...READ AND HEED!

From 1976.

Nelson T. ‘Pete’ Shields
Founder of Handgun Control, Inc.

“I’m convinced that we have to have federal legislation to build on. We’re going to have to take one step at a time, and the first step is necessarily — given the political realities — going to be very modest.

Of course, it’s true that politicians will then go home and say, ‘This is a great law. The problem is solved.’ And it’s also true that such statements will tend to defuse the gun-control issue for a time.

So then we’ll have to strengthen that law, and then again to strengthen that law, and maybe again and again. Right now, though, we’d be satisfied not with half a loaf but with a slice. Our ultimate goal — total control of handguns in the United States — is going to take time.

My estimate is from seven to ten years. The problem is to slow down the increasing number of handguns sold in this country. The second problem is to get them all registered. And the final problem is to make the possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition — except for the military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed sporting clubs, and licensed gun collectors — TOTALLY ILLEGAL.”

-Pete Shields, Chairman and founder, Handgun Control Inc., “A Reporter At Large: Handguns,” The New Yorker, July 26, 1976, 57-58

“Yes, I’m for an outright ban [on handguns].”(They have now gone after rifles)

Until 1934 US citizens were always better armed than the Army.
Since the Revolutionary war, citizens have always been better armed than the average soldier in the USA.
When the Army was using smooth bore muzzleloading lintlocks,
Citizens were using super acccurate muzzle loading Rifles.
When the army adopted a muzzle loading rifle,
Citizens were using breachloaders.
When the army adopted a breachloader,
Citizens were using rapid fire lever action rifles, some holding as many as 28 cartridges.
When the army developed a really good 5 shot bolt action rifle,
Citizens were using Pump, lever, and semi-auto rifles, with extended magazines.
When the Army adopted it’s first semi-auto rifle,
Citizens had been using similar ones for thirty years.
Not till 1956 did the Army pull ahead of the citizens with the adoption of a select fire rifle.
With the army adoption of the M-16, the civilians had AR-15s.
As for ammo, every military bullet eventually became the top selling hunting rifle round. From the 50-70, 45-70, 30-40 Krag, 30-06, .308 and 223.
Now, after 243 years people are suddenly screaming about civilians owning rifles, even though since 1934, they have promised that with each new gun law proposal, “Rifles will not be affected!”
Well, now they are after the rifles.

In college, I thought about adding Criminal Justice as a second major. I went to meet with the head of the deparment, and he had a 'Handgun Control, Inc.' bumper sticker on his office door.

It was a short meeting.

The M1 Garand cannot hold more than eight rounds. It is a semi-automatic.

This is a bit of a myth/exaggeration. Rifles were accurate at a distance, but were very slow to load. Muskets were pointed at the enemy and were devastating because of their high rate of fire.

The military held on to single-shot breech loaders because of a concern that troops would needlessly waste ammunition. Civilians who had to pay for their ammo were much less inclined to ‘spray and pray’.

The only reasonable gun control is: keep away from kiddies (ie.g., <5 years old) and nutjobs (e.g., if you hold arguments with trees, nope).

Other than that, anything a gov’mt can have any US citizen should have access to .

Absolutely true, but I was talking about privately owned firearms. The type Timothy Murphy (1751–1818)used to nail Sir Francis Clerke, 7th Baronet and General Simon Fraser.

Today’s fainthearts would be screaming bloody murder over the use of super accurate rifles! OH, they have been already!

I've been following Massie lately, I've been quite impressed. He has undergrad and masters degrees in engineering from MIT, which still means something. He may be one of the best guys in the House. I need to figure out if he's my BIL's rep, he may be.

I loved this recent survey he conducted.

He is solid as a rock FRiend.

And he wont back down. Ever.

Probably the best House member in terms of being a conservative and meaning it.

Although, there are others now like MTG/Gaetz. They’re all buddies.

Cincinnatus.45-70 :" Biden, as a columnist recently said, is a gun quack.
Knows nothing about it, talks a lot,

Also, as is true of a lot of "addictive families", either actively addicted, or by having 'enabler members',
there is evidence of "Obsessive/Compulsive Behavior" with no flexibility, .. or just outright compulsive stubbornness.
Fascist Authoritarianism without benefit of ethical concerns.

The Brits objected to the use of rifles at the time. “They are deliberately aiming at our officers!” They thought it nothing short of murder. Of course some like to say the same thing when our pilots took out Yamamoto during WWII.

Good. MTG is adjacent to what may be my new Cong. district. It’s complicated. But the net is, I’m sort of moving in the right direction.
