As far as I know, people from outside of the Schengen area need to have a negative test in order to avoid 7 day isolation. As much as the whole covidian fascism is nonsense, I don't see how letting in infected people would be so cool, based and so on.

Obviously, it will change if shit really hits the fan and huge crowds of refugees reach the border. But it's not happening, the border traffic is normal, the war hasn't started yet and I don't think it will start unless accidentally triggered off. People in the west seem to be more exited about the whole thing than people in CEE. It's not the “Ukrainian crisis”, it's the power struggle between America, Russia and several other players with Ukraine just being used as the pretext.

“Since the Americans are essentially refugees, I would think Poland would welcome them regardless ...”

C’mon, (man/woman). They are not refugees, there are still international flights out of Ukraine.

--- "CFR tells in theory how many people actually die if you get it. Period."

We agree on the definition. "Getting it" is "case" in CFR and "die" is fatality.

--- "One can't really tell how dangerous a disease is unless comparing it to how many die from actually getting it."

We disagree on the inexact word, "dangerous." Given "actually getting it" is an unknown, amid the many assertions of asymptomatic infections and people who do not report and more, one does not calculate anything with unknowns in an equation. This is why CFR is used among different groups within the same population for those groups within. What groups -- plural -- from within a stipulated non-global population are compared with today's loosely-defined "case fatality rate?" One need at least two groups and a defined population. CFR for one compared to CFR for another within the same selected population.

Everyday we see merchandising and marketing saying things like "20 percent savings" and "half off" without knowing the underlying "population" or price is. We have been trained to at least see, if not fully accept, such messaging.

One can calculate from global deaths and global population a somewhat clear mortality rate, also properly called death rate.

One cannot calculate a case fatality rate when case counts are unknown, "estimated" as some "official" sites like UW IMHE and Imperial declare, "presumed" as the WHO documents advise, wrapped into multiple co-morbidites with other causes, and even bogus reports revised at a later date.

As you write, "...the numbers are a bit screwy and incomplete. So it's not perfectly scientific and accurate."

But 20 % off for a limited time only. Or....

Besides, if work in the discipline of oil extraction, you would not calculate a percentage of failed exploration attempts based on LESS than all explorations in any given area. That would be a legit failure rate. But between two companies' exploration failure rates within a given area, you could calculate in addition a "case failure rate." The two would not disagree, but compliment one another.

And as to that inexact word, "dangerous," your post agrees with my conclusion, "CFR of 1% overall isn’t that terrible, esp. with poor numbers to use. I have no problem seeing that CFR and not being scared." We agree, it seems, even if not about which equation to use.

I’m in Budapest trying to get my family to the US. Our consulate here is useless. They won’t answer the phone. We went to the consulate to speak with a person for advice and they would not let us in. We got instead a piece of paper written in convoluted govspeak describing the extended process.
I am beyond furious. I don’t need money or humanitarian aid. Just three tourist visas so that I can take care of my family at home and apply for extended residency while matters progress. Useless apparatchiks sit on their azzes doing nothing, complaining they are “overwhelmed “.
This after our esteemed President Biden publicly promised that Ukrainian people were welcome and would be allowed rapid entry into the US. As a native born American citizen of 10 generations I am ashamed of our government and I curse the apparatchiks who are indifferent to the citizens.
