The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued a Common Murre with a disposable mask wrapped around and deeply embedded in its wing, on Monday.
The bird was found near Lover’s Point Beach in Pacific Grove one local, Kevin Abedini who was on a late morning jog.
"I thought it was getting a sunbathe but I noticed that the waves were hitting it into the rocks so I realized it was injured. I thought maybe the tail was broken or maybe the wing was broken but it couldn't walk," Abedini said.
Wildlife technicians removed the mask but the extent of the injury went further and the bird had to be euthanized, the SPCA said.
"It kept twisting and twisting and twisting and twisting tighter and tighter. So it constricted the blood flow to the wing. Sadly with a seabird, they would most likely drown before they were found by the public. We’re thankful that this bird was found and we could give him a humane peaceful end to his life," Beth Brookhouser, spokesperson for SPCA Monterey County said.
Brookhouser points out that it’s a tragedy that could’ve easily been avoided if masks were disposed properly.
"Nationwide, wildlife centers are seeing injuries from wildlife entangled in disposable masks. This is the first wild patient taken into the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Center, but it is likely others died without being found by humans," she said.
Social media needs to swoop down and cancel this bird for promulgating mal-information which could serve to erode serfdom’s confidence in Mother Government.
WOW. They banned straws in CA because of some 3rd grader’s BS story of a turtle inhaling a straw. What will they do about masks?
I’m seeing discarded masks everywhere. This restaurant near me has feral cats they feed to keep the mice population down. Last night a cat was tangled in a mask.
That’s probably the number pet peeve of mine during this whole thing, constantly finding masks in the street.
Agree, when I walk my dog in the country, I see more discarded masks these days pitched from car windows than beer cans and condoms.
Libtards love whacking the very birds they’re supposed to be saving with their stupid windmills 🤪
The bird was probably just practicing for the inevitable California-wide mask requirement for water fowl.

what about my Iron Mask?
It is gross.
If it didn't kill any birds, I'd say you are good.
We live in a disposable culture. Like most things, it’s both good and bad. The fact we can just dispose of even large things, like cars that have plenty of use left but are out of fashion, says we are wealthy beyond belief. Who amongst us has suffered privation or cold? The wealth that allows us to dispose of all things we use gives us amazing good health. Walk into the parking lot of any hospital and you’ll find an armful of disposable masks. In the parking lot of a fast food restaurant, you’ll find all manner of refuse that allowed us to enjoy the meal we consumed. You have to ignore a lot of good to focus on a relatively tiny bit of bad.
People are careless. It’s not a problem with the disposable culture. It’s a parenting failure. I can honestly say I have never even thrown a gum wrapper out of the window of my car. Good parenting.
Any no BB-gun handy.

At first blush you would think that the environmentalists would demand NO MORE MASKS as it is killing animals, but NOOooo! What they will do is make it a felony punishable by up to 50 years in prison for improperly disposing of face diapers.
Birds are really under assault. 5G is also a killer of birds. Not to mention cats. I donate to the Audubon Society because I love birds and they are an organization that keeps a very small amount for “administrative costs.” As my friend said, “Why should some guy make $22 million for running a nonprofit?”
I like animals far more than I like most people and care very much about these things.
Mask are running the environment when you mandate their use?
I have a great idea.
Let’s just ban masks to protect the birds.
“Brookhouser points out that it’s a tragedy that could’ve easily been avoided if masks were disposed properly.”
This goes right back to what I’ve been saying all along.... IF covid is as dangerous as all these health “experts” and politicians have claimed, then WHY are these disposable masks not treated and disposed of as a biohazard?
Source (data, URL, etc.) for that, please...
Thx,
